Micro glitter
« on: 03/09/12 15:05 UTC »
I use some micro glitter in the paints on my jig heads and today I came across a tube of a holographic micro I never use for that purpose and thought, I wonder what the stuff will do in a crystal clear plastic. So off we go on another adventure.

Ax you can see, you really don't notice too much of an effect here and this is after I added about 1/4 tsp to 4 oz and a dollop of silver string glitter. In the cup the plastic and glitters had an almost pink hue from the micro glitter and out of the mold things look just like plain clear plastic until it hits some light. You can see just a hint of blue and maybe some red in there from the micro glitter but more flash comes off the silver string. I'm going to try a drop of transparent red or fluorescent pink in this blend to see if the colorant makes the glitter fire up. If you look carefully you'll see what appears to be very tiny air bubbles in the plastic, but its that micro glitter, not air. In the work room with natural light this plastic is as clear as water.

Oh well, onward and upward. I'm going to split the remainder of the batch and do the tint thing using the two colors mentioned.

Tom,

I use the .008 Silver and either .008 Black or .15 Gun Metal in some different baits (no color) and it is pretty effective.  I think the darker glitter helps break it up a little.

I am going to try some gunmetal.....I like that color. Thanks for the tip.

I have a stash of this .003 glitter from years past and really have gotten away from using it so much even in my jighead colors in all but one....fuscia. The holo stuff got pushed to the back of the pile on a high shelf until I found it today and thought what the heck. One never knows until an effort is made, eh?

I'm taking a breather right now, but I have another pearl of wisdom surfacing and am going to play with it shortly.

In a 4 ounce batch, how much of the gunmetal will give a nice mix?

I would use it about like you would use silver.  There is one thing it does that is pretty cool, if you get your plastic a little hot (~360) it will give a light blue tint to your plastic.  I know the color is coming from the glitter, but the glitter pretty much looks unchanged.  Just something to try if you want to experiment with it a little.

I added some of the gunmetal to the clear concoction from earlier during a re-heat and probably didn't get enough in the mix.  Then again the lighting on the work table casts a terrible shadow when trying to light up really clear plastics. Daylight would be better on this one.

I'm thinking about calling this "fire and ice". The top color is three ounces of plastic, 1 drop each of transparent red fluorescent, strawberry and two drops of fluorescent orange transparent, red hi lites and garnet glitter. The bottom color is as described before but with a small amount of gunmetal glitter added.

I did another color as well but will definitely need to wait for daylight on that to get a pic. That halogen lamp really did weird things to the blue in that color combo. Basically its the same top color but I added one drop of electric blue and some turquoise hi lites to the clear bottom plastic shown here. The one drop or colorant took it way deeper than I thought it might. I did two shoots using it and hung it up for the night. I'm not sure if I like the results or not. I was hoping for a combination that ould work well with darker water now that we are seeing some run-off up here.

Plenty of time to play this weekend. Ma is heading to the daughter's fine abode for two days and I have nothing to do but think about creating without any interuptions. I am so looking forward to that.
