Aluminum Foil
« on: 03/27/12 16:08 UTC »
Instead of hand pouring one color and injecting the other, I inserted a piece of aluminum foil in the mold, injected with one color, removed the foil and half of the plastic, and injected with another color. It worked great! The only challenge was getting the little tentacles back into place but you can just tear them off.
This may have already been brought up or shared. If not, I hope it helps you and your bait making process.

Another thought...has anyone thrown the swim shad on an Alabama/ umbrella/ 5 baits at once rig?

I threw the swim shad on an A-rig two weekends ago and got absolutely HAMMERED by an 8+ lb largemouth 10 feet from the boat, fought him for 15 seconds or so and then he decided to put his head back down and take another lightning fast run to freedom and WHAM!...Broke me off! My heart sank to the bottom of that lake for a quick second! LOL...but hey, that's fishin.

I have an idea using foil that I've had for awhile, but just haven't said anything about it yet but, now that we're on the "foil" subject I'll throw it in there. How about shooting half of a holographic swimshad, carrot, or whatever other bait you'd like with the lami plate, then inserting a strip of foil matching the profile of the bait and then shooting the other half?? I thought it would really give that bait some nice shine and character. What do you guys think?...Anyone tried it?

szuloaga  -  Getting the bait to stay "laminated" is a major consideration.  My playing around within this area has had its problems.  Good luck, I hope you can figure out a way to get it to work.

I think you would be okay adding a thin strip, but as Paul pointed out, there needs to be enough plastic touching for it to bond.

One of my repeat customers is now exclusively using the swim shad on the umbrella rig.  I was going to give it a shot this past weekend but the river flooded out and turned into dark chocolate.  Nevertheless, that tail design is powerful.  (Thanks Jason)

The foil was discussed previously but thanks for reminding me about it!!!

The swim shads are absolutely a killer bait for the umbrella rig. I have many customers just killing the largemouth, spots and stripers on these.

Almost makes me mad to be at work getting fish pictures all day!!!  >:(  :D

I almost forgot- last week, on the swim shad, a friend and his group were catching - get this-ling cod out in the pacific on a shrimp rig with this bait in a black/silver lam.  He said he grabbed it since nothing else was working and all the sudden that's all they wanted.  love it.  I'll put up some pics if he ever gets around to sending me some.

My money says any fish that feeds on shad / minnows / ( even shrimp ) will hit the swim shad.  Location, coloration, and speed.  Ling cod and catfish being only two examples.  The tail action seems to me to be a swimming / active / fleeing minnow.  Where the carrots are a more subtle minnow action.   I plan on using the swim shad and the carrots as partners, one more active, one more finesse.
Jason hit the nail on the head with his response " there has to be enough contact for the bait to stay together".  And, that contact can degrade as you fish the bait and cause delamination  :'(.

Put a few tiny holes for the plastic to seep through and you won't have an issue. I worried about inhibiting the action in the wutz it but not the swim shad. Tail does the work.
