why?
« on: 06/23/12 13:19 UTC »
i was heating 2-4 cup pyrex cups and everything was going fine. half way through heating i reached in to grab a cup to stir and instantburn. plastic wasnt hot but the cup was. VERY hot. i could hear the skin sizzle as soon as i touched the cup. should have had gloves on i know but yhe cups just never are that hot to me. why would the cup take all the heat and not the plastic. it happens every so often with differant microwaves. just dont understand why the cup heats  up and not the plastic?????????  after i came in for a handfull of ice i went back out to check the temp of the cup. it read 877 degrees :o :o cant be leave it didnt just blow up, being that hot I wont use those cups again. after 6 shots of Ga shine it dont hurt much but i sure feel like having anap. lol so I will check back here later after I lay down for a bit. Just dont understand why cups heat up so much and plastic was barely 200 degrees????

While I wouldn't suspect this to be the problem, especially being a Pyrex, check to see if that cup states it's "microwave safe".

up from my nap, I went out and checked and I think I know what happened. The plate shifted so the cups were not rotating. The handle was right in front of the metal (microwaver thingy) The handle took in all the power I guess. I will head back out in a while and see how things go then but I will have a glove on taking it out of the micro.

That's strange.  Glad nobody was hurt seriously.

If the burn is bad enough I would go to the doctor to prevent infection. Hopefully he would prescribe Silvadine (can't spell it) creme. I got a old tube, even though it's out of date, it still works. It stops the pain pretty quickly. Nice to have on hand when dealing with hot plastic.

I did a little research and the melting point of Pyrex glass is approx. 1500F. WOW.

I'm never grabbing a cup again without my glove! (I to often take the cup out of the mic without a glove).

You may have to see a Dr. to get it to heal correctly. It sounds like that glass was hot enough to cauterize the wound...and you may have restricted blood flow which will affect healing and increase your chances of infection. (the "sizzle" you heard is a tip off).

I was told (don't quote me) that this can happen if you dont center your cup in the microwave. microwaves heat from the middle out. so does your cup of plastic. hopefully I read your post correctly. still loopy from the morphine i had for the burns i got this morning. things can really heat up and do some damage. I hope your ok and on the mend!
