Flash Foil?
« on: 06/08/12 08:34 UTC »
Cannot even come close to this?
Tried shooting 3 or 4 different hi-lite colors.
Anybody know the secret to this?

A couple guys have figured out some pretty cool ways to do it:

There are more cool pics of different stuff in there as well.

Freaky cool.

I saw those. Nice
This one is actually closer to what I trying to do.
Maybe try shooting clear around the highlights?
May have to switch molds to try this.

I haven't tried it yet, but the only way I see of doing it is to put a small amount of plastic in the belly; stand a pice of the foil up in the plastic; wait until it cools some; close the mold and inject the rest of plastic? Wonder if Im close?

Smaller molds would really demand some concentration I assume. Like Gary has suggested though, clear with the fiol in it on the bottom 1/2 of the mold would maybe work. If it we me, I'd cut out a template and use it to cut the foils needed for a shoot session. I'd have some clear hot and ready the use. I'd dip the lower edge of a foil into the clear, then quickly set the dipped edge into the bottom cavity making sure the foil stands up into the center of the cavity. When all cavities are loaded this way, close the mold and shoot your cover color.

This would definitely be too much putzing for this guy. While the baits look great I reallt wonder whether all the work entailed is really worth it, especially in water that has more than just a little stain.

I agree Ctom; Is it for the fish -- or the fisherman.  I am a big believer in glitter; when the sun is out esp.; and in clearer water.  Foil I believe works as well.  But will foil work much better than glitter?  I am not sure there is enough difference to add all the hassle.  If you look; most of the baits that use foil have a leaded hook built in as well.  Then there is not much extra effort to include the foil.

I doubt it would catch more fish; lie you said glitter will do the job, but I like to keep up on all the pour techinques even if I don't use them! :D :D

Those blue baits in the second pic where a core of a different glitter with hi lites is more in tune to what I would do. I want a transparent belly section, one that light can flow thru. That foil will stop the flow of light.

I think those foiled baits are something else to look at, I just have different preferences for things I use. I rely more on the glitter and hi lites so the bellies stay more transparent.

I've tinkered with this some . The easiest ones are molds that accept a jig head or some type of hook . The foil is then wrapped around the head or whatever shot with glitters or color high lights . The foil will then show through . Other methods are varied and mostly unsuccessful or time consuming beyond patience . Ive impregnated lures with feathers giving it the look of bone structure and fins . Maintaining lure integrity . Ron Don got really good at this.

Been too busy last day or so to try and figure this out. Do not make baits to sell just for me and my friends (Getting more friends all the time  :) ) If I only wanted to fish with colors that caught fish I could get it down to about 4 basic colors. What fun is that? Reason I started making my own was so I had something no one else has.

Do not mind spending more time on just a few baits if they look really good after I finish.

Going to head to Hobby Lobby Monday and see if I can find some foil or other shiny material really never heard of or thought of feathers what a great ideal. THANKS

Thanks for the replys.

Use hackle feathers . They are thin enough to let them stick out of the cavity without hindering the mold or the shot . Leaves very little flash if any. If I use colorant at all it will be florecent colors and a touch of glitter . Barred feathers give the best impression .
