Pro Series vs. Multiple single molds
« on: 09/21/12 14:20 UTC »
With the wedding over....and my birthday coming up....I'm giving some serious consideration to the 4.25" Flippin' Hog (6 Cav) Pro Series mold.

Are there advantages of going with the Pro Series vs. buying 6 molds?

Cost of 6 molds is $310...the Pro Series is $300. I understand why the the cost is so similar (basically the same amount of aluminum and CNC time.) So it's not for the $$ savings.

Better Quality control with the baits?
Easier to use the Twin Injector on one mold than 6?
Does the Twin Injector hold enough plastic? I have the 3oz injectors.
Will I need the big CCM injector?
Just plain faster than 6 molds?
No plastic clogging in the injector between molds? (that's always a problem for me for some reason).
Because it's a lot more fun to open up one mold and see 6 baits?  !

Less $$$ on clamps, less plastic waste to chunk if you screw up, less storage space, EASIER FOR YOU TO MAKE BAITS FOR YOUR CCM FORUM FRIENDS......

I'd have to recommend the Pro mold....

I like both...can pour baits faster in reg molds (I use small clamps I buy at HD, so clamping really not a problem), say 8 or 10 cavity carrots, if I have a limited amount of plastic heated. If i could knock out molds one right after another with a lot of plastisol heated, I'd go pro series. I believe if u go with Pro Series,  u have to match it w/enough plastisol, if u r after production........

I have also been pondering this.  I would think whether you are going to shoot laminates would be the big factor.  One "shot" vs six.  Way Less handling of either a twinjector and certainly easier than having to deal with six laminate plates  ( and cheaper on the plate cost ).  I routinely shoot six molds with one injector and find it no big deal as long as they are not in a laminate plate clamp set up; BUT;  this is for single color injections.  If I was wanting laminates; I would have to consider the Pro Series very seriously.  ( I am assuming that all the cavities on the Pro Series would yield good baits at the same rate as six single molds -  This is close to 100 % of the time for me).

I am still on the fence on this one. Others have said the positives for the pros so i will throw out some possible downsides? I do have both and like both.  I make a lot of 2 color (body/tail) baits and for these i much prefer using the smaller hinged molds.   Also the bigger molds take longer to cool down once they get hot if you are doing a large run of a color.  If you make a bad shot with the twin on a pro you just ruined twice the baits LOL!  But the pros came in handy last night making a bunch of single colors!

I also would consider if you ever want to re-sell down the road. Single molds might be easier to re-sell vs pro....

Think there are pros and cons of both really.
