2 inch tubes cold water smallmouth
« on: 01/15/13 22:53 UTC »

I've had recent success in 30 couple degree water with a small tube I dip.  It's only 2 inches long but catches some nice smallmouth this time of year when they wont bite other larger soft plastics.  I rig it on a worm nose jig, 3/32nd oz in areas without much current, 1/8 in areas where I need to.  The jig heads are poured with an Owner 5318, size 4, so even if I don't feel the take (can't always call it a hit this time of year), they hook themselves.

I use other baits almost this small like paddle tails, but this is my most successful bait when the water temp is below 40.  It has me looking at the crappie and panfish molds.  My buddy ordered the 2 inch glider mold and has poured a few for me to try.  I'll give it a shot next time out, rigging it on the same jig head.  Anyone else use small stuff with good results in winter?

Welcome to the forum.  At least I see "real water" in the background.  Hope this was a recent picture.

That's a brute.  It's been so cold here that even the rivers froze  :'(  Without an auger it doesn't matter how much I finesse them.  I have caught my fair share of nice bass while fishing 1-2" plastics for panfish during the open water season though.  One of my favorite things to do is throw small hard baits like a Lucky Craft LV-jr70 or a Pointer 65DD on a light spinning rod.  That's some fun stuff.
