I use lureworks s b coat soft plastic paint clear 3000 from spike it. I paint my plastic with water base and and solvent base paint. Like you said , once you get the bait made in the size and shape you want you want to keep in that way. Once I get all my baits made , I wash them in dawn dish soap and water , then rinse them and lay out on paper towel to dry . plastic bait always seems to be oily when they come out of the mold. Then I paint them , let dry , then paint them with the clear coat. It seals them and gives them a pretty good sheen. Some folks like to seal the eyes on their baits by dipping them in plastic and it seems to work fine for them. Most of my plastic bait are used on jigs that have eyes on them . the rest are used for trailers which doesn't need them. If you need eyes under a skirt you prolly aren't fishing anyways.
