Floating Toad
« on: 01/16/12 09:17 UTC »
Hi Jason
I shot some 4.5” Toad and added 2 pieces of the foam the length of the belly cavity, then dipped the toad in clear plastic.
Went out on Saturday to fish them and found that they are sinking.
I am using a 5/0 horny toad hook.
Do you think I have to add more foam?  I think it will be a problem if I add 3 pieces of foam as it will impede the hook.
Please let me know if there is a solution as I want to sell them as Floating Toads.

Thanks

Pieter

I Googled the 5.0 horny toad hook and it doesn't look much different than the 28 degree 5.0 Mustad hook I use, is it?  You can see in the video the length of foam I was using in the 4.5" Toad to get it to float well (2 pieces just over 1" each).  I cut the ends at an angle so they form to the shape of the frog better.  I don't think you need a third piece.  I think your foam just needed to be a little longer (or your hook may be quite a bit heavier???).

One thing that I did to help figure how much foam I needed was to cut a piece long enough to float the hook (the bait will float on its own).  I kept trimming down the foam until I knew how much I would need to float the hook.  Once I knew that, I just cut it a tad longer and then in half for the toad.  That may help you figure out what you need to float the hook.

Here is the video that shows exactly what I did.

Do they float without the hook?

If so, you should just need to add enough foam to offset the weight of the hook.

If not, order some CCM plastic...it floats like a cork!

I have not look if they float with out the hook. I know the Craokers float without a hook in it.
I will paly with it today andlet you guys know.

I would like to use CCM Plastic, But it is to costly to send to South Africa.
I had Bear send me 5 Gallons and the freight alone was $220.00.

The international freight on 5 gallons of CCC would be approximately $100.
