Have a question
« on: 08/22/17 12:57 UTC »
I haven't been pouring for 2 years due to health problems. Just started yesterday. My plastisol is from Do It, and was brand new. When I heated it, it turned amber color.  Does it have a shelf life? I pour only as a hobby for myself and my fishing partner.

Welcome to the Do-It forums!

Did you shake the heck out of the plastic, or stir it if a large container? The components in the plastic will settle [hard pack] with non-use but should re-incorporate by shaking or stirring well. The next thought will be around using a thermometer to monitor the temperature as you cook the plastic. Then, what's the heat source? Lots of variables in this question so sorry about all the other queries coming your way.

Everything tom said.

But if your plastic is turning out Amber, add a little motor oil colorant and some gold and red flake to taste. Might as well get use out what has turned. But yes it should mix back together

Welcome aboard Idahomike. I had the exact same problem that you are having some months back. I had some plastisol from about 18 months ago that was fine when I used it then, but seemed to go bad when I returned to pouring again. I believe the problem was that when I was using it at first I didn't mix it, or shake it before each use. That resulted in drawing off an uneven mixture. Then after an extended period of settling the properties of the plastisol were not balanced enough to get a proper blend to prevent the color change. I purchased new plastisol, mixed well before each use, and have not had the problem since. Slow Burn suggested using a motor oil colorant. That is exactly what I did with the rest of the plastisol. Motor oil, green pumpkin, black, any darker color will still make a great usable bait.  Good luck!

Boy am I glad to hear that I'm not he only one who's had the problem. Funny how 2 of you suggested using the stuff anyway. I did the same thing I mixed in some baby bass, black, and silver fleck and got a really neat color. But I poured some with just the amber color and some silver fleck, that was a really neat color.
Thank you all for the help I hope I can return the favor.
