Milwaukee Post Spawn Brown
« on: 12/13/17 12:01 UTC »

As I've mentioned before, I don't want to bore you with every Brown we get in the Milwaukee Harbor. But once in a while we get one of these scary ones that even make me stand back and drop my jaw.  Pearl white 3.5"Swim Shad on a weighted hook (3/16th - 91768BLN 3/0, screw lock in nose).  He freight-trained it on the fall.  This bait combo is amazing as it falls.  It falls so slow and nearly horizontal while the tail swims.  A very unique presentation for cold water.

33.5"L x 21.5" G... we think it was tickling 20 pounds.  Released to get to 30 pounds some day!

I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.

Bore us with fish pictures ?  Is that some kind of joke or something ? LOL  NICE fish and post as many fish pics as you want.

BTW  My weighted hook mold came the other day. Too late for this season but they will get a work out once the river thaws out. Now I need to find some hitchhikers. I have some somewhere.

I had the same thought! It’s cool to see for sure. I know Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin, TX is a hot spot for urban fishing down there. I pull some ok fish out of waters in the city but nothing like that. There is a small lake about a block from where I work which is a mile south of downtown OKC that a couple of guys at work have pulled 8-11 pound bass out of on their lunch brake. I have never so much as had a bite out of that lake but other people are catching them.

All joking aside, it takes a certain type of person to put up with the kind of cold that fishing on or near open water at this time of year brings in the top tier states. Marc is the epitome of such a person. Nothing is colder than open water in the winter. I was one of those people myself until I was put on beta blockers and blood thinners, now I can't even look at an ice cube in the summer without putting a jacket on.

Thanks all.

LOL, I like my baby bunting Tom!... Seriously, I'd like to say how tough I am but that's not the case at all.  There are so many good warm clothes out there these days that there is no need to be cold while fishing anymore.  It may have been 15 degrees that morning with a NW wind to 25 MPH and I'm not feeling a bit of it.  We have found that we can fish down to at least 0 degrees or so. Dress right and you can focus on fishing and not just trying to stay warm.

I just wish someone could find a fool-proof way to keep rod guides open.  When I built my "winter rod" for the lake I didn't go any smaller than a size 10 guide and an 8 tip.  It takes longer to freeze shut... but it still freezes shut.  I've tried all the home remedies and they either wear off quickly, or then end up on the line and cause a bigger mess.

As far as the city in the back ground, yes its a very unique setting.  Fortunately, the fish have no idea that they are down town.  I know someone that fishes Chicago too and I see shots of big fish with the Shedd Aquarium or the Adler Planetarium in the background.   Pretty cool!
