Pearl Smoke colors
« on: 01/24/12 22:37 UTC »
So I have a bottle of Pearl Smoke Gold and Pearl Smoke Silver.

How is it best to use these colors? Is it the same as adding silver or gold pearl powder to clear plastic?

Thanks...Bill

Good question. I may buy some down the road.

They are a combination of pigment and mica (different color pearls).  You can more or less treat them like using pearl powder - it's going to somewhat do the same thing, just different colors.  I will also add additional pigment to slightly change the color depending on what I am doing.

I just used a few of Jason's smoke/pearl colors. First time so it was a journey in its own right. Do yourself a favor and stir the contents well, and then shake them well. It will make a world of difference in the outcome. I was making 4 oz batches and did the mixing slowly. I also was adding the same color glitter [.015, blue in the blue smoke etc] along with some hi lites in the same fashion. In the end I ended up with some colors that looked like they stepped right out of the magic kingdom....look at them from one direction and the look one way, step to the side and look again and they seem almost invisible.

I like to add a few drops of silver smoke to my CCM Green for my baby bass laminates. Almost impossible to see the affect in a photo...but they look really nice in person! Kind of like super micro glitter....

I've done the same thing with a BB color I use.

These pearl/smoke colors are not hard to use and can really make things click. They are very similar to hi lites and will work well with hi lites as long as neither gets overwhelming. I think there is a fine line when adding hi lites and pearls to create an illusion and I feel that they should be used in amounts where everything is working together without washing your wanted affect away. At least that's how I approach them.
