Lake mapping project
« on: 01/28/12 00:41 UTC »
Here is a map I have been working on using my HB898 and DrDepth software. I am impressed with both. Lake is about 350 acres, 3 miles long, and over 20 miles of shoreline. and I have about 300+ done and about 30-40 hours time into it.
Actual resolution is about 6900 x 5300 so will print out very large nicely.

MonteSS  -  How do you like the DrDepth software.  I looked at it spring before last real hard, but didn't buy it.  Was wanting to see if there would be some updates coming along.  Looked really interesting to do some "truely detailed" structure maps of several of my fishing spots.   Sidescan allowed a much better understanding of what the area actually "looked like" and downscan helped a little more.  The aspect of creating a 3D model with high detail was very interesting.  Bottom hardness integration was also a key.  With the TVA lakes being as old as they are; siltation is a big controlling aspect of where fish will hold.
That and current, always have to know the current on the Tennessee
River.  Oops,  I digress.

I am going to have to check out this software.  I echo Jason's comments- that's cool!  Can you map out any body of water?

I got the basic software. I am probably not using near its potential. It is wasy to use (once you figure it out) and comes with tutorials. There is a forum for the software where the experts hang out.

Yes you can do any body of water. Google earth had a clear image of my lake which helped alot doing the shoreline.

I did the whole perimeter and shallow areas with my trolling motor so I wouldnt bang up the prop on the big motor. Then its a matter of going back and forth in grids to fill in the rest. The more data points you have, the more detail you get. I have to keep boat off plane and at 2500-3000 rpm to get good data because of my transducer location.

Takes alot of time and patience. We have a warm winter this year and was nice to get out and cruise around with the radio on.
