Need Help with Carrot Laminate
« on: 01/30/12 11:36 UTC »

Having trouble with my carrot laminates. In my poorly taken pic you can see a good laminate and a laminate in which the pearl belly injected onto the top of the 1st pour. At first the first pour wanted to stick to the laminate plate but a little worm oil rubbed on stopped that, but still got several "bad" ones on each pour I tried. I think
now when I pour the first (brown) color and tear off the sprue it lifts the plastic just enough to let the 2nd color flow beneath the 1st poured plastic. Have been trying extra hard not to lift the 1st pour when I tear off the spure but am still having problems. Does  anyone understand my problems??? Is anyone having the same troubles??

I haven't ordered any of the Laminate Plates...yet...but I have done some laminates using another method.  I shot some full-mold 3" Skinnies (3rd pic of Green Opal Minner), cut them long-ways with scissors, laid the halves back in the cavities on 1 side then shot my 2nd color...

If You're getting some "lift" when shooting the 2nd color, the only thing I can think of (in my limited knowledge) is, how much pressure are You applying to injecting the 2nd color?  Could a little too much pressure be causing the 1st color halves to raise up?

Edit: Or, I always try to make sure the laid-in pieces of the 1st color are seated fully in the cavities.  Maybe the 1st color pieces are slightly raised when the 2nd color is shot?

Inject the second color slower.  It will lift your baits up vs. flowing over it if  it hits it with any force.

Yes; I have. This is my most common "failure".  There is a learning curve with the laminate plates as well.
This is what I have "learned" based on my experience with split laminate injecting.
Make sure you have the first half baits "seated" well in the cavities after you remove the sprue; especially in the head area. Also; If the second plastic is really hot and thin it has a higher tendency to sneek behind the first bait half. ( In my mind I said i needed a hotter plastic for the second side "to get a good bond" ).  But this causes a much higher chance of "floating" the first half.  Also; a slower; lower pressure injection seems to really help.  I very lightly "hug" my second side injection longer to allow some extra bonding during the early plastic cooling.  Another thing to note - the first half injection can create a bait half that is more prone to the problem you are having if the plastic is real hot when you inject it as well.  This creates a smaller sized first half bait due to cooling shrinkage that will be more prone to float.  I lightly "hug" this injection for a while as well to keep the mold as full as possible during the initial cool down "congeal".
The biggest two ; for me; are the reseating the baits after sprue removal, ( especially in the head area ); and gentle injection of the second half plastic.

I forgot to say - Nice looking bait.  Going to catch some fish with that model.

Thanks for the tips guys. Your suggestions make a lot of sense. The majority of my pours have been coming out looking really good. I think my biggest problem will be finding the time to fish all the baits that I've been making ;D.

The baits will give you more reasons to go fishing.  The "need" to test them out   ;).  Hope the ideas help.  It is like opening a carton of eggs and seeing some cracked when I open a mold that has flawed baits.
