Tomorrow is day 1!
« on: 08/27/18 16:42 UTC »
My order arrived today! Room is all prepped and organized.

Think I have all the extra gear I need, bought a new architect lamp to have good lighting.

Pretty excited to try this plastic making. Have 3 months to get it right before ice fishing.

Question I have is how long do I let the plastic sit in the mold before I open it up to take out?

The other question I have is since I’m pouring small molds, what’s the right amount of plastic should I start with?

Let the fun begin. As far as how long before de-molding, you just need to wait long enough for the plastic inside of the sprue to cool enough to handle.  Usually 3 or so minutes is sufficient.  I shoot a lot of crappie baits and I use 4 ounces of plastic to begin with.  That is enough to completely fill a small injector.  Good luck.

Enjoy your new toys. And wait a couple min. Than demold. If you shoot a bunch of molds you can normally demold the first by the time you the last group.
May your days be filled with sun shine and you always have a tight line. AMEN

So having fun doing this. Getting good pours on the ripper but the nano fry, and the ice tickler I’m not getting any to fill. Do I have temp wrong? Pressure?

Also the other weird thing I have is when I go to push the excess material out of the injector the cap pushes out too.

I’m letting the plastic fill up to 350 before I inject. Am I missing something?

What type softness plastic to you have?small molds sometimes like a softer or thinner plastic. I know the Mo magic likes soft. On small molds it helps a lot to preheat the mold that way the plastic doesn’t set up as soon as it hits the cold aluminum. I heat mine in the microwave... no kidding on that or am I ???  :P I toaster over is lot safer choice for preheating molds. I like mine where it would be nice to have a glove To hold on em for every long. A real thin layer of worm oil helps as well

I crank it up a lot just to get it warmer faster.

Rex.  I have not shot the molds you are shooting but I just did receive the 2.5 inch Mo Magic mold and also experienced problems with tails forming.  I solved them by slightly thinning the plastic (softener) and after heating I inject with a very fast and short burst of plastic, quickly pulling out and topping off the sprue.  It works well for baits with extremely thin tails.  You can guage your results by inspecting your baits.  Tails don't form, not fast enough.  Tails formed but have flashing.  Fast enough but you held your injector too long  and the resultant back pressure caused the flashing.  Hope this helps, just keep playing with them and you will figure it out.

Agreed with the tactics for the mo magic! It shoots a lot better on a hot mold as well. Great bait BTW :P

Hi Rex, I am on my way to the shop right now to take a picture of my mold and injector warming system. Very cheap and easy. I was supposed to do this for someone else a couple months ago, but  I forgot to. Be right back.
Sorry it took so long Nails.

That was easier than the last time. Here is my high dollar mold & injector warmer. $2.00 total investment @ the local thrift store. Really helps when I have to shoot in cold weather.

I normally set the temp @ 200° unless it gets really cold in the garage, then I have to turn it up a little more. It really works well.
