Fat fork and color shift
« on: 11/28/18 11:38 UTC »
My two favorite things to play with. I just got some new color shifting pigments and wanted to try them so I dug out my bag of black bodied Fat Forks. The Fat Forks are easily the best of baits to work with the color shifting pearls. Did not disappoint.

The big problem with color shifting pearls is a guy an never get the whole effect in a picture. This picture is no exception. Fun stuff though. The blue/gold in the center shifts so fast that its a mind blower. The blue goes to purple to red to gold in a zip. The gold goes from what you see to green then purple and blue.

I was hoping to get the back color on the bait on the right. Its a beautiful heavy pearl that shifts from an orange to red to gold and then green. The belly is a single color pearl that is supposed to be hot pink but over the black shows as a bluish purple. The same hot pink is on the bottom of the bait to the left but because of the angle of the light the back's color is more purple than it is with just a slight turn and of course I can't get the bait just right to show the colors I want in this picture.

None of these baits has been dipped with a seal coat so the colors are a bit less intense here but still nice. I have a half dozen more new colors to tinker with and hope to get some done before I start with summer sausage this weekend.

great colors as usual CTOM.
I noticed one of the baits has a dent in it. I have this mold and have caught several species on it including a 6 pound bass.but I'm getting dents in about half the baits and I'm  having the same denting issue with the Super Stinger.
Do you have a solution to this issue?
The extender from Do-It and shooting at a lower temperature does improve the denting but does not eliminate it completely.
Any advice would be greatly welcomed.
Thanks

First off, I love working the color shifting pearls with this bait and will shoot up maybe 50 at a time to have plenty on hand to play with. Some will have chartreuse tails, some solid black.

On the dents, when I am shooting to have these to play with I don't work about dents, color is my objective yet if I am making these for a friend I don't want dents and generally shoot the plastic at a cooler temperature, and make certain to top off the sprue. I have a few of the early prototype molds that had smaller gates between the bait and the sprue when dealt me fits with dents and those I have used the Dremel and opened the gate areas up a bit to help eliminate denting by allowing more volume to stay in the gate in a liquid state longer. It takes very little material to be removed to almost eliminate the denting issue, but I'd try injecting at around 320 degrees, maybe even 310 as long as you're doing a single color body. The molds will heat up fairly fast too if you're moving the injection process right along and that can also affect the denting likelihood. Dents can be conquered but since everyone does things a bit different from each other and plastics and injectors can vary, there's curve to figuring it out.

I have noted that white can be the worse color for dents and I attribute that to the huge amount of heavy pigment that makes the color. The titanium white used weighs a lot and is denser than many other colors and due to that I think it dissipates heat way different than other colors do. I struggle with white bodies in this bait and won't make them any more.

I'd start with a lower injection temperature, then start poking into other ideas.

Hi CTom, how do you apply shifting powder and how do you fix it on soft plastic body, please?
Great works.
Bye

Cami....

I use a soft bristled artist's brush and dip it in the dry powder. These in the picture are trial baits that I'll likely wash off to do again with eyes, then they'll get a cover dip in clear plastic to seal everything up.

Thank you for answer. Have you ever tried to fix powder with the flame of a kitchen torch? and if yes, do you think that it could enough, without the clear dipping I mean?
Bye.

Thank you for your advice shooting at a cooler temp works great. I don't use the X2 white its just to hard to work with. That fat fork is a great bait and i have added it to my skunk beater line up.
Thanks again for your help.
