The go-go grub's tail
« on: 12/03/18 14:49 UTC »
Has anyone ever tried filling the un-vented side of the mold's tail sections to make a thinner tail? I think I recall someone filling one side of a similar tail in a mold but can't find the posting back nor do I recall exactly who did it. Mike J. maybe?

I have the mold and have had some inquiries about how thick the tail is and if the tail action would be better if thinner. I was thinking in terms of JBWeld one the un-vented side and maybe just four of the 8 cavities as a trial.

Tom.  If it is the post I am thinking of, I think it might have been WW who filled in one half of the tail mold of the essential frog mold.  I solved the problem by using a piece of foil to cover the legs only then cutting one of the leg halves off giving a much thinner leg.  I am not completely sure if it was WW but I think it was  and I believe he used JB Weld to do it.

Sorry Mike J.  Had the right post but swung and missed on the person.

Mike, DF, thank you. That's the thread I remember. I'll be giving this a go on the cavities on one side of the runner.

Thanks again.

I used a two part silicone on one side of the mold.  This way you can remove the silicone and go back to the thicker tail

I did cavity and compared it to an unaltered cavity's tail and I like the original much better so I pulled the JB and cleaned it up. The tail on this bait is actually much thinner than the empty mold makes it look. I shot a half dozen colors that I'd use as tail colors and all of them appeared real thin and washed out with the putty in there. The same colors in the original cavity came out nice and bright.

The mold shoots super nice and even in a cold mold the tail fingers fill completely at an injection temp of around 330 degrees using re-melts. I may have to take a walk to the river behind us tomorrow and make a few casts. There may be a couple random walleyes still in the area....or crappies.

Here are a couple colors I toyed with late last night.

These were done in the mold after I removed the JB. All of these plastic colors are re-melts from stuff in cups on the microwave cabinet. The brown is a thinned out sassafras and looks like a real nice champagne now. I'll be doing a box of colors up for my own use this winter and will be ready for open water as soon as the ice opens up. I think we've all seen swings from bait styles and actions from year to year. The venerable old twister tail had fallen by the wayside for me several years ago but every indication from late fall was that they were going to come back in vogue...of course there's nothing "standard" about twisters anymore and this bait is no exception. The fat tailed 2" grub should be getting attention too.
