Orange Pepper
« on: 03/21/19 16:56 UTC »
Here is a color everyone should have in their back pocket in dirty water scenarios.  I fished an ice fishing tournament last Saturday, and while I was sitting at my desk Friday grinding away it hit me that I would likely be facing some dirty water due to the massive amount of snow melt and run-off we'd been experiencing all week. With no time to pre-fish I decided I'd pull a play out of my walleye playbook and pour up some Blaze Orange Pepper wax wigglers with UV in them in the event that I'd be facing some challenging visibility the next morning, a move that really paid off.

Chocolate milk made it tough for a lot of the competition but the UV Orange Pepper Wigglers were bright enough that if I could get them within 6" of a fish I could get bit almost every play. A combination of the right baits and the sun energizing their metabolisms made for a strong bite. My partner and I ended up icing 117 crappies during the derby with many up to 14" and took the win. Most of the fish we caught were ghost white like the one below coming out of the dirty water.  UV orange is a great bait to use in dirty water; I've learned this over the years on the river and I can now confirm it also works on the ice as well.

Essential Series Plastisol, Orange X2, .015 black flake, and UV powder.

Nice bait. Nice fish. Great looking plaque. Congrats.

I make lots of baits with orange somewhere in them when fishing the dirty water of spring. Depending on the time and how dirty the water is crappies will respond to orange, as will waldo, when other colors fail to produce. Orange is a "limited use" color for me, as is pink. BUT, I don't go fishing without them in the box.

Nice Job!!!

Though I've not added pepper to my orange, I really like it... flo orange is my go-to color for dingy water smallies and I think those brown jumpers will really like your tamed down peppered version for more normal situations on the Miss.
