Lami Plate
« on: 04/06/19 03:08 UTC »
Im new to soft plastics and molds.  Question, for example, on page 112 in the 2019 catalog,   underSuper Stinger it lists "lami plate"  under mold type.  What is a lami plate? what does it do?  If I order the drop shot mold type do I need the Lami Plate?
Thanks for you help

Welcome Deant. A lami or laminate plate is used to temporarily replace half of a mold so when you shoot the mold it produces a top or bottom of the bait depending on orientation of the lami plate.  Like making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich if you will. The plate will usually just have a cut out for the nozzle and/or runner and the centering pins. It usually replaces the non venting side of the mold.
After you shoot the mold with the laminate plate let the plastic cool and set up. Then replace the lami plate with the original half of the mold and shoot a second color onto the existing plastic that is in the mold. Now you have a duel color bait.
A similar effect could be achieved by hand pouring a half of the mold, close it up after the plastic cools, and then shoot a second color on top of it.
Do you need the lami plate to use the mold you’re interested in? No, but they sure do help in producing some nice clean looking two color baits. Dig around in the bait picture section to see some amazing color combos these guys have came up with.
Happy tackle crafting

When I started out, before I got my dual injector, I just used a piece of aluminum foil sandwiched between the mold halves and got 2 halves, then just put one side in the mold and shot the second color, worked great. Then i got the dual and wouldn’t go back, yeah you “waste” some plastic but usually I mix the sprues and come up with another good color (morning dawn makes a really nice purple for example)

Thanks Lines, but I can't take credit for them as I pulled the pic from the gallery (to save deant a little searching).
