1 1/2" cranks
« on: 04/09/19 15:01 UTC »
Here are a couple patterns I tried the other day on these slightly larger crankbaits. The body portion measures at 1 1/2", still inside the crappie crank realm. Being a bit larger, I tried some random pattern stuff to get the mottled appearance in both the Crappie and the Pumpkinseed baits. This worked fairly well with a slightly bigger bait. The vertical bars on the pumpkinseeds were done using a modified mustache comb....every other tooth was taken out.

Nothing fancy for the top coats on these. The Crappies was done with clear gloss top coat Createx with both green and blue hi lite powders added. The Pumpkinseeds were top coated with the clear gloss and bronze hi lite powder.

Dang Tom the more I see your cranks the more I am tempted and take the plunge and  give the crank baits a shot.  Okay what all do I need to get started ? Im only interested in Crappie size small cranks because Crappie and big Blueglls is all I fish for. Any idea where to get small blanks? and other equipment needed.  Thanks

Shaun....do some price checking. A Badger Patriot 105 airbrush like mine will be about a $70.00 item, the air hose another $20.00. You need a compressor...I bought a Harbor Freight $35.00 pancake model. Find a decent in-line pressure regulator, maybe $25.00. I use all Createx standard airbrush colors in the opaque, transparent and the pearlized. I use some Gloss Top Coat to mix hi lite powder used in soft plastics as the last coat airbrushed on. I use CS Sealcoat to dip and let drip the baits after the eyes are put on....you can find the sealcoat here in the store. You'll need airbrush cleaner and reducer. Go to a thrift store and pick up some shot glasses for mixing paints and a hair dryer to heat set your paint coats.

Here are some websites where you can find the un-painted bodies:

www.sheltfishingtackle.c om            https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?    www.aliexpress.com/popular/unpainted-lure-bodies/2html?

https://www.wlure.com/collections/blank-lures?

I'd strongly suggest you get some bodies the size of a #5 shad rap to practice the painting on so you can developed some skills with the airbrush before you tackle the real small bodies. You'll need to figure out the pressure settings that work best for the brush and paint you use along with actually experiencing putting the paint on uniformly. Once you've got some of the larger bodies done up go ahead and just wash the paint off , let them dry and start over with them. Its takes a bit of time to get comfortable with the whole process but you'll pick it up fairly fast. Expect some screw-ups...just wash them away. If you get frustrated just clean everything up well and put it aside for a few days, then go after it again, don't force yourself into sitting there getting flustered or practicing a bad habit.
