Colors

What are your favorite colors for what fish?

Personally I favor purple/chartreuse tails for crappies and sunfish and walleye/sauger, but honestly I'll fish any color as long as it has a chartreuse tail when it comes to crappies/panfish. I'll put bait with a pink tail on once in a great while, or an orange tail on a bait but I don't see the level of success with the last two tail colors thatI see with the chartreuse tails. Body color-wise anything that's relatively clear with glitter and a chartreuse tail is second in line.

I do like quite clear baits that closely resemble forage for walleyes on occasion, a smelt or shiner rendition. Crappies will sometimes like or prefer a real natural presentation too so I'll always have a few of these in the box should I stumble across such a bite.

Heads I am pretty much stuck on some sort of transparent purple over bare lead and if that isn't cutting it I'll hang a plain lead head. Chartreuse, orange or pink are used if the occasion demands it but that's a rarity.

Just curious what others across the country prefer for their head colors and plastic colors. Its an interesting comparison I think. Anyone?

Great topic!  In my home waters of north central WV I lean towards a pumpkin seed, watermelon, or orange black pepper single or twin tail grub for smallmouth. A 3” fluorescent red over gold rapala crank bait is key too. Largemouth I like a motor oil red flake, watermelon gold flake, chartreuse or pearl. Trout is white/pink, chartreuse, or red. Crappie anything chartreuse and or white. Fishing at the outer banks for trout/rock fish/flounder the most productive color for me has been white w/chartreuse yellow or chartreuse green tail. A smoke ripper swim bait with small blue and silver flake and a touch of blue hi-lite on a swing football head was pretty good last year.  As for heads I like a candy yellow which comes out a light chartreuse green on bare lead or a white head. Whatever color contrasts with the main body.

For panfish Purple with orange head, black with black head, chartreuse with different colors depending on the day. Walleye’s smoke with blue and silver halo, Flo blue and silver halo, root beer with gold and black,  watermelon with red and chartreuse tail head colors very with each color As long as it contrast the plastic color but plan lead when the water is clear. Bass watermelon with red, black / blue pearl with blue, root beer with gold and black, laminate watermelon with green, gold top and pearl white bottom, black top and flo blue bottom, black top and red bottom. That pretty much covers my colors.
May your days be filled with sun shine and you always have a tight line. AMEN

I make lots of first run colors and lots of remelts, but I make more chartreuse with silver flash than the rest combined... and this is for everything from bluegills to muskies.

Purple chartreuse is my go to plastic combo for trout and redfish.

If I'm throwing a topwater is a super spook (or spook jr) in Clown.

Like everyone else I have several colors and baits, but when in doubt those above get tied on.
