Question for the airbrush guys

I have a buddy who is wanting to do some touch ups on topwater baits that have been worn out by fish. That particular skill is not in my bag of tricks (yet). What I was wondering is, can you paint over the top of the original paint job? And if so will it look ok? Or do you have to take all the paint of and start from scratch?

I scuff baits up all the time using a scotch brite pad... Paint and clear coat... No need to remove all of the paint.

I too simply scuff up the bait to knock down the shine and spray away. I use CS seal coat to finish the baits. Dip, drip.

After you scuff up the paint surface, cover with a good white coat of paint and heat set before you apply your pattern paint, then like Tom said be sure to top coat.

If the paint wants to dimple or orange peel, wash it off, dry the body and wipe it down with high % rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol, then re-coat. Sometimes very minute spots that are either extremely sick or have oil on them occur and this usually takes care of the problem.

I don’t mean to highjack the thread, but suppose you’re starting from scratch? What is the best paint to use for painting balsa bodies that are bare? Never been painted? I have no experience with airbrushes and have been wanting to try it. Sorry for the intrusion.
