An experiment
« on: 11/03/20 15:44 UTC »
About a week ago I ran out of holo silver glitter and forgot to order a replacement.  So today I picked up a jar of irredescant glitter at Wal-Mart thinking at this price I had nothing to lose ($2.89 for 4 ounces).  Having heard of all the horror stories I decided to test it and while I was at it test my plastic as well (bait plastics worm formula).  I pored 4 ounces out and added a half scoop of blue hilight and heated it to 390 degrees (I purposely left out heat stabilizer).  I then added a small amount of black flake and a scoop and a half of the Wal-Mart stuff.  I am happy to say that everything went fine.  The plastic did not scorch and the glitter did not curl or melt.  Next up will be the remelt.  I will report back on how she goes.
I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.

Good to hear olsarge. I was also looking at some Wal-Mart glitter the other day, and wondered if it would work. Anxious for your results on reheats.

Lines. I was surprised at how well it withstood the temps.  They also have a very fine glitter (almost a powder)  that I want to experiment with in clear plastic instead of pigment.

WW.  I shot a 4 inch carrot and a 2.5 inch thump it grub

Be very careful when heating plastic to hot it can become a toxic emergency in a hurry no amount of ventilation of mask will protect you from it.

Update:  I did my reheat this morning.  This time I was kinder and gentler on the reheat because I just wanted to see if the glitter could handle it.  I chose to shoot the little 2.25 inch paddle tail because it is thin enough  to see the glitter inside of the bait itself.  I heated it to 340 and shot it.  Complete success .  Glitter handled the reheat well and is easily seen on the inside of the bait with no signs of curling/melting.  Overall,  very happy with the results.

The problems I have had with the generic glitters hasn't so much been curling from heat but from bleeding after the baits are made and in the box, several days/weeks down the road and the bleeding goes all the way thru the baits into anything that they are in contact with. Maybe something has changed with the cheap glitters, who knows.

Just to help clarify I did hear from another bait maker that the purple is a very heavy bleeder.  That is the only color he had experience with.  I plan on purchasing other glitters but they will be treated as experiments.  I would think that a red glitter may bleed as well but only time will tell.

Nuther Update.  Well yesterday I decided to shoot another bait.  Another 4 ounce batch.  This time I added 7 drops of dead ons char/lime (this has quickly become my favorite chartruese color).  I heated the plastic to 350.  Added 7 drops of char/lime and 2 scoops of the irredescent glitter.  The results were spectacular!  The point is that my initial tests  were not nearly as accurate as I thought they were.  The differences between the two baits is pretty stunning.  I will keep my future testing on a tighter leash.

Sarge, that charlime is a dye. Do you see any bleeding in baits with , say, purple body chartreuse tails? The bleeding being between the tail color and body color?
