hook location
« on: 01/26/21 19:03 UTC »
Can you help me with hook location in a ultra spinner jig model: SJU-3SA. I'm trying to determine a specific location to place the hook. Should the eye be in the middle of the body or up top by the eye? I've seen several on you tube and they are all different. If there a specific way to do this for in the way the mold was designed? Im new to this and hoping someone would help! Thanks Allen

Hi Allen, and welcome to the forum.

The short answer is it all comes down to personal preference... (I tend to cheat my hooks as far back as I can because I don't like using trailer hooks)... but the bottom line is as long as the hooks are solidly in the lead, you are good to go.  Regardless of what you decide, you'll get more enjoyment from catching fish on baits you make yourself!

You're welcome.

There's lots of crafters on the site and together they have a wealth of information on just about everything imaginable.  Not everyone agrees on some things (like hook placement), but most will have good understanding of the processes for creating various baits and are more than willing to help. If you ever need a hand, all you have to do is ask... tackle crafting is a fun hobby and making the baits the way YOU want them is what makes it even better!

Allen, welcome!

I agree with what efishnc said, it's usually personal preference, and as long as the lead isn't bending or breaking, you can position a hook in many spinnerbait molds however you want.

I use a variety of hooks, different brands and they're not all the same dimensions, so I have to adjust.

I don't like the hook point  too far back, so generally the hook eye is around the middle of the body. I've never found that to be a problem where I had to always use a trailer hook either.

Sometimes, you have to experiment some to figure out what works best for you with the hooks you're using.
