3D printing a mold
« on: 03/23/21 21:00 UTC »
A fishing buddy asked if I could make a specific dual color 4” tube for him. After several failed attempts at hand dipping, numerous YouTube videos for tips and yet another several fail attempts I put that on the to do list. This morning I got to thinking about another possibility for crafting this beast. This is the CAD design I came up with. I based it on the AI Double Dipper 3” tube I presently have which uses the aluminum rods. I need to see if those rods can be incorporated into this mold now that I’m thinking about it. My thought is I can shoot the right side mold first to get the under color, transfer the rods over to the mold on the left and shoot the top color. Then cut the tails. Thoughts, critiques, comments?

Edit. Not sure why technology decided to rotate the picture sideways.

Do you have a picture of the tube you are trying to match?

From what I see is your wanting to pour the inner color then insert that tube into the outer one too do the outside one. I have no idea if it is possible because of tight clearances.

I myself shoot a 4 inch Do-it tube with the under color and then stick a 1/4 rod in it and hand dip the outer color. This way I get sort of a hand dip action and I don't have to cut the tails.

I do

You should be able to dip that..
Looks like it mite be 3 colors not sure.

dip it 2 times in red,
then 1 time in the brown with flake  that is over the red.
then 1 time only half way down ( body only ) with the green with the flake.

  Does that make sense ?

yep you could round the end of a 1/4” bolt off dip it in worm oil & dip in plastic to length desired, let cool a little, dip in second color  to form body & repeat in third color. I use the angling a I 4 “ double dipper myself & gand dip isometines too to make two color tubes.  I also hand dip them too. Love me some tunes.

yep that’s what I do as well on the 3” AI. I’ll dip the rods, put them in the mold and shoot the outside color.
