Beefing up my ned rig game some
« on: 05/16/21 18:55 UTC »
First let me say that i have some heads made by 21XDC & some made by Hawgthumper & both are outstanding & you can texas rig a ned rig bait on them which is what i've been wanting. I made some watermelon red skirted ned rig baits that i made by making some 5"  essential series senkos & cutting them down to the front side of the egg sack because i wanted them a little bigger for this. I then took the hot knife & attached some watermelon red skirts made with the  angling  mold to them. I texas rigged  them on these heads & dropped them into a can of water &  they stood straight up with the skirt flared out & the tail wiggling. I'd already tried one on a head  made by Mike, but the lake was dirty & i will say that i threw it into everything & never once hung it up. I also was sent a video of it standing up no matter how high  or what position  it was dropped from. I'll be using these in 1/4 & 3/8  ounce  when it gets hot this summer & you have to finesse fish to catch deep  smallmouth. I wanted a beefed up ned rig head & have it now thanks to Mike & Jimmy.  ;D

I don’t understand. The two pics of the heads are nothing like each other. I’m just not a Ned rig guy, I guess.

Bill no they’re not. The naked head  that Mike made will stand up no matter if you drop it & that includes even if pitching it from a sideways position. Jimmy’s head stands straight up too with a bait attached. They’re 2 different styles, but achieve the same thing & give a good option for using a bait caster instead of a spinning reel & light line. I’ll be using a  finesse bait casting setup & 12 pound line with these & you can throw either of them into rock, timber etc. & get it back without a getting hung  or worrying about the hook bending out.

Now that I can understand as I love a good flipping bite. So these modifications allow the Ned to be fished weedless. ;D

These will be fished specifically for deep smallmouth that have to be finessed because of the summer funk they’re in.  It gets rough around here in summer & I fished a Ned quite a bit last summer &I caught a bunch of 18 inches & over on it when we couldn’t get them to bite anything else & wanted to try it completely weed less so I can put it anywhere  deep or shallow in rock, timber etc. & you can both of these heads.

They look good Les!   Thanks for posting the photo's. I'm not a fan of video's anyway.  ::)

I've seen the heads like that in some of the FB lure making groups. I can see the appeal, and pour the Ned heads myself, but have not delved into wanting to modify that mold yet, unless one of the major hook brands decides to produce those hooks.  IMO, relying on hooks that someone else is having made, particularly from a business stand point, might get tricky. They've become popular for sure.  :D
