4" Ripper Bass
« on: 07/06/21 12:24 UTC »
The bass this morning were hot on the 4" Rippers with hook slots and done in a medium watermelon with purple and garnet glitter over a clear silver string glitter belly. This one was the first of almost 4 in a row.

Rippers done in my Super Sunfish color, the watermelon and the pro blue/red hi lite pearl belly all took fish today All were fished on Do-Its weighted hooks at 1/16 ounce on 4/0 Gammis. The fish in the picture was just over 4 pounds while it was the smaller of my 4 largest. All told I believe I had 8 bass and five pike AND one dogfish of major proportions that came unpinned at the boat.

LOL. As I understand it the main river is having a super good year for those sheeps. I thought you fished walleyes Kyle. I thought I had a 50" pike hit this morning but it turned out to be a super sized doggie. I'm pretty sure it's the largest I've had on the line this season. Thankfully it came off right at the boat by the edge of the net.

Your reports you heard of an epic sheep bite were no joke.  I've got waypoints for you, Tom ;) We did catch some dandy walleye and even a few nice saugers.  Surprise of the day, though, was the number of smallmouth bass on the wingdams.  They were on every dam.  It made for a fun day even in the heat.

That is funny.  I was all down.  Wabasha to Alma.  I did think about you as I drove by the Zumbro on my way home that night.  I cooled down at Slippery's in the afternoon for a cold one.  She was a warm one.  Did you run into any gills or crappies?  I hadn't been up there for several years it was nice to be back.

I'll assume you hit on smallies in the Tipiota Point area as wingies are full of them.

We didn't focus on pannies at all. Guys fishing them are having a real tough time in the backwaters. We met a boat with two guys at various points of our fishing  that were targeting sunfish and crappies and they'd caught two in about four hours. The wing dams on the main river will have sunfish and perch right now but the crappies have been really hard to locate in backwaters and the main channel for that matter. Usually crappies will begin to filter back into the backwaters around the middle of September and will continue the shift until ice-up. Main channel crappies should start showing up in another month along shores having good current with both rip-rap into deeper water and weeds. Weeds tend to be the key.

The Zumbro is way too warm this year so we've stayed away. The themocline will be super deep and a guy would have to haul crappies up twenty to thirty feet thru super warm water with low oxygen so we avoid the lake. October is a good month out there to start looking for crappies and November is good also as long as there isn't a ton of freezing temps to push them deep into winter haunts.

Sure sounds like a awesome day. The rippers for some resin for me is the most productive bait’s DO-It has made in every size period. Man them Dogfish and sheep head are a hand fool and have been known to wreck a lure or two. Great bass TOM it’s funny how different water have such a difference in size of fish it seem to me from watching shows and forum. A 4 lbs. by my is a big fish and by you them seem a little more common but I also know that river and backwater Fish run a little longer but there normally lighter in weight but it’s not the case by you.
May your days be filled with sun shine and you always have a tight line. AMEN
