Top Water Bonanza
« on: 07/26/21 17:50 UTC »
I was provided the wonderful opportunity to fish with a good friend and a few of his family members over the weekend. Although he and I have talked regularly by phone I had not seen him in person since bear season winter 2019. On the river by 6:30am it was a tad foggy in the hills. The water was average height and clear. I had the arsenal of soft plastics weighing down the back of the kayak. I however was committed to trying out a 3” Whopper Plopper since I haven’t really used it much.
Wow, they stood in line to hit it. Several times I had 2-3 fish going after it at once. Two occasions I had 3 casts and 3 smallies. Unfortunately my knot failed on a hook set and the bait was gone. I did pretty good after that on a 3” hellgrammite laminate and a 2.75” twin tail. Total for me 40+ small mouth and red eye rock bass. One 16” a few 14” rest in the 12” range. Got to see two bald eagles on the float too.
It was good to get out and even better to see my buddy again. The top water game was just an extra.

I’m sorry for the pictures being sideways. I have no idea how to fix this when posting them from my phone. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you had a great day.  Thanks for sharing.  I like the little fish and the plopper.  It always amazes me how sometimes little fish hit big baits that are as big or bigger than them.

It’s crazy how those little guys think they are monsters. I couldn’t believe that dink jumped on that bait. Luckily those hooks are sticky sharp and I was just lifting the rod tip to set the hook. I might have jerked him back over the boat if I would have leaned into him.

Great pics. There is something about a WhopperPlopper that seems to just PISS them off sometimes. Glad y'all had a great trip. Thanks for sharing
