Freestyle jig mold issue
« on: 11/02/21 08:52 UTC »
Anyone use this mold? Just picked it up the  mold from zeiners and have trouble with the wire guards coming through the side of the 1 /32 oz  jig leaving a small hole from the wb400 wire keeper.  I figured the powder paint would cover it up but it doesn't.   Also does anyone cast these without the wb400?  I  have included a photo of the problem  the mold was really hot and keep getting this issue every pour.

I have the mold but haven't noticed any holes in the 1/32. I'd put eyes over the hole or spray the mold with Drop out and that should fix your issues.

Thanks for the help. Yeah I plan to cover the  heads with the eyes but it just bugs me with it doing that and probably  use some with no eyes on.  I  ended up cutting  the wire keepers back  hated to do that  but that's the only  thing i could  think to do.  I don't know if maybe  I received a defective  bag of the wb400 wire keepers or what.  Zeiners said  to contact Do it but I don't want  to  bug them..  What is drop out for?  I haven't ever used that before.

I pour all the sizes with the bigger WB800 wires and do sometimes have to trim them to fit some of the smaller mold cavities. I keep a pair of heavy cutters on my bench just for that purpose. I'll occasionally get one that pokes through the side of a head, but not often. I had too many problems with the smaller wires getting loose in the heads, so went to only using the bigger wire keeper.

Drop Out is a dry graphite type spray that is used for pouring bullet molds. It creates a thin coating so the lead comes out of the mold easier and it can also help with flow when pouring. Any type of dry graphite spray will do the same thing, but the Drop Out brand is often mentioned because it is sold specifically for pouring, and it does stay on the surface of the mold cavity a good long time.

Does do it sell the drop out? Yeah I will definitely pick up a can.  I wish those wire keepers weren't so darned expensive especially when planning on pouring  thousands  like I'm doing but  that's the only thing bad about it.  I wonder if anyone has ever tried to make there own? Probably be more trouble than it would be worth? Not sure.

I know of one party that makes their own wires but the investment was substantial so unless you plan on making several thousand jigs at a time, just buy them. There's a bit of a price break by the 1000.

You could try nipping all but a nub off the dogleg bend that gets cast in the head. On the smaller heads where smaller plastics are used one doesn't need a lot of length to the bend that's poking out.

Hello yeah see that's what I want to do is make thousands up.  I just got the minnow head jig mold with wire keepers  and it does the same thing but no biggie I will just clip them off to.  I ordered in some tiny eyes the 1.5 ones for the small heads but what is the best way to  attach them being so small. Do you use super glue? Should I coat something over the eye to seal it once it's glued on? Or should glue be fine ?  Do you guys use the gate cutters to clip off the jigs?  I noticed If I'm not  careful I weaken the small jigs so I'm trying to be extremely careful getting the sprue off but wasn't sure if gate cutters would be of benefit or not?  I don't have a problem with the bigger jigs just these small ones especially with wire forms.  Thanks guys

If you got the Do-It eyes they are self adhering. Stick pretty well but do need a clear coat to help seal them.

I hold the head and twist the sprue off and never had a problem.

I'm wondering if the wire keepers are slipping when you're closing the mold up.
