Who's ready....?
« on: 03/15/22 10:14 UTC »
Of those who live in the snow belt, who's fed up with winter and ready for some open water action? I quit ice fishing several years ago when breathing the cold air and exhaust fumes from heaters became a challenge. I don't miss ice fishing at all and actually have done some winter fishing in boats when it's been warm enough, but now I am ready for some real warmth.

The lake 12 miles to my north is almost open to the private dock I fish very early on each year but the Mississippi River spot I enjoy so much has a lot of ice on it yet. After this week's predicted 50's and 60's I'm hopeful that enough run-off will have blasted that ice off so we can get back in action. We've had less than normal snowfall totals and wayyyyy too many below zero nights and days this winter and the ice locally is thick. But I can hope the heat drives the ice out.

A birthday in late November and then Christmas left me with a mess of gift cards for Scheels so I now have two new reels to break in. I've been busy cranking out plastics to fill voids in my planos, new line on the other reels, so I am ready big time.

If ya'll aren't already fishing, what are you doing to get ready? I'm pumped.

Picking up the boat today and going to start getting it ready. First tournament is April 3rd. My guess is low 40's in the morning and mid 50's later in the afternoon with a bite window of maybe the last hour. Welcome to Ohio.

Although we don’t have the ice problems you have we generally see high and muddy/dirt water now through May in our streams and lakes. I‘ve been pouring plastics getting supplies ready for a smallmouth river kayak trip followed by a week at the beach in June.  I will soon break out the camping gear and inventory it for a multi day trout fishing excursion in May. Aside from that I will be getting the kayak out soon and then the yard and garden equipment.

The ice is off the northern Indiana lakes, but we've been having a lot of wind lately. Got up to 63 today; very nice. Started some of my garden plants on my grow table and getting my raised beds ready. Still running at the WMCA. Got to wait for warmer weather to do that outside. Just finished a bunch of crappie and walleye jigs. Got a bunch of crank blanks to airbrush yet. (I clear coat them outside when it's at least 50 degrees) Pick my boat up next week and get it rigged up for the year. This is one of my favorite times of the year!

I find it incredible that I have to explain to a grown American citizen that taking a knee during the National Anthem is disrespectful.
