Game Changer Bladed Jig?
« on: 08/23/22 13:56 UTC »
About a month ago, I saw a video of a Blane Chocklett "Game Changer Fly" that really blew me away. I immediately wanted to know what the multi-jointed body would look like on a bladed jig, but after more searching - I found that no one makes them. So I had to be the test dummy...

Here's the link to the video of the Chocklett Game Changer for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQuzd-STXOM&t=36s

Being a custom tackle guy that primarily makes bass jigs I was very intrigued, and ready to see if I was up for the challenge. I did some research on YouTube to see how they are made, and it is a relatively simple tie! I basically just had to palmer some foxy brush onto the individual body sections, connect the body to the jig hook with some wire and finish at the head like a skirted jig. I got some of the materials off Amazon, and I made up some Do-it Poison Tail Heads with the hook eye slightly bent out - and this is what I came up with!

Prototype #1...

The finished result is 6". I am super excited to test it out and see how it swims... more to come on that!

But let me know what y'all think! Are there any other fly baits that you think could be sized up to be real weapons of mass destruction for big bass?

WOW. Sort of looks like a 20's era squirrel tail sporting a maribou skirt and a chatter blade. Wild to say the least. This might make a good Muskie bait.

Mehhh... Just kidding  ;D Nice unit.

I think you should make some 3/8 and 1/2oz Manic Mullets with 5/0 hooks and tie some long white and gray bucktail with a few long chicken feathers in the center. Bass don't see oversized hair jigs very often, and they're not talked about much.  :-X

I think they'd make a great forward facing sonar bait to pick off suspended fish and stroll over brush piles.

That's awesome, but frankly, I don't get too giddy over a lot of the flies on the market now. I'm sure they work, catch plenty of fish, but so do the old time flies. That's a lot of tying and materials but for folks inclined to tie them, I say have at it!

I'm just old & past that stage, and the older, simpler styles that I fish with, still do the job.

How do you think something like this would look tied on a jig head and with a blade added?   This fly is around 8" long.  ;D

BTW, I have done one with rabbit strips, similar to the Hammerin Hare style if you remember them. It's got some great action to it, but I haven't caught anything on it yet.  It's based on this fly, a basic rabbit strip streamer.

For me, durability is generally the key, and quite often a hair body holds up better than a plastic body... the trouble for me is plastic bodies are my current pleasure and its hard for me to return my focus to legit tying.  The double bunny fly would be my suggestion for the easiest way to achieve this pattern on the quick... but sometimes doing it the long (er) way is far more satisfying.

Regardless, it looks definitely good and we all know it will get bit... as far as a pattern name, I would call it the 'orca'.
