Busy for sure.  Unfortunately not fishing related busy.  Hopefully in a few more weeks time will clear up.

I think in general bait making forums are slowing down. There is too much info on social media and YouTube anymore. Even Do-it has their own pages. Let's be honest, why ask a question on a forum when all you have to do is pull a video up on YouTube and watch the whole process. And if you don't like how they did it then there's 30 more to watch. There are hundreds of bait making pages on social media that show thousands of different baits styles and colors. All you have to do is find the ones that work for you. It's all free.

I think this plays a huge part in what we do.

And its holiday time and peoiple are just tied up with the season.

A week ago Ma and I drove down to the headquarters for a visit and got to spend some time with a bunch of the crowd there. Fun time. Based on how much activity there was there I don't think things are slowing down for the company.

Your right. I think bait making is up. You see new guys jumping in all the time. It's how you get your information is changing. For me I can learn more from watching a video than you telling me how. So I watch a lot of videos. And for fixing stuff around the house it's the bomb.

I haven't done any lure making or fly tying in a good while. My wife has been ill and I've been taking care of her as best I can. She's making progress but it's been slow. I've even suspended my business because I don't have time to deal with it now.

I hope to get back into it after New Years, but we'll see.

I haven't stopped reading & following the sources I follow, so at least trying to keep my mind into it, but that's still not the same as hands on.  I check in most everyday on all the forums I follow, and check my social media accounts to see what others are still doing.

I've noticed that a lot of folks got into tackle making, but from listings I've seen on social media & Ebay, some aren't staying with it.  I think some had the impression that it was an easy way to make money, and found out differently. I think those of us who are dedicated to it, stay with it for reasons beyond making money. Even through the years between businesses, I still very much enjoyed making jigs or tying flies, as I see it all as an extension of my fishing, so that it compliments it and the dollars involved don't matter. However, it does take time to do, and not everyone sees the value in spending that times making their own.

Of course, with the state of the country now, I'm sure folks are all in different situations, so that plays a role too, and as has been said, all the forums & social media seems to slow some this time of year for fishing topics anyway.

Heck, I've always liked that things slow down some, as it gave me a chance to catch up some on other things and start planning ahead for the new fishing seasons, but so far I haven't even considered any of that.  :(

Boy if that's not the truth. To me this is just a hobby and I don't sell anything. My advise would be not to quit your day job.

This is something I hear quite often. I tell people the primary reason to make baits for themselves is to have something, some color combo, that nobody else has. Make money at it? Good luck.

I really enjoy working the site here and helping where I can. I have my shop and have gotten into doing one on one sessions with people looking to get into the bait making game: they can try their hand at it and see if it's something they'd like doing, but I am straight forward with them telling them that it's not something to look at to make money.

Good points bigjim.
Praying that your wife has a speedy recovery from her illness.
I too have had a lot less time for tacklecrafting, but not for health reasons.
Plan on pouring some lead this week to make hair jigs and plastic.
Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas

I've learned how to make some profit from making & selling what I produce, but I'll certainly never get wealthy doing it. I made the mistake with my first business to sell to shops & guides, and now, there's no way I'll do that again. I guess some are satisfied with doing that, but at my age now, I'm not interested in turning this into a big enterprise and I'll only sell direct to anglers. I've made a good many friends selling tackle so there's other benefits.  As long as I can keep it going and pay for my personal fishing, that's all I need from it.

Yeah, some of them think there's a lot of money to be made based on prices they see in stores and with not much effort or investment, or frankly any skills or talent for it either. The jokes on them!  ::)

Lines, thank you for the prayers! They're always welcome!

I hope all of you have a very Blessed, Joyous & Merry Christmas, and of course be safe too!

Yes, like you bigjim, the friends and family plan keeps me going.
I'm in the hole, but I have every mold and piece of lure making equipment I could possibly want.
Seems like if you do something for a living, it loses it's appeal.

Well, I still have friends that I stay in touch with that I had made with my first business and I closed it in 2003.  I don't need to make a living from my current business, as I'm now retired, but agree with you that it does become work, and not a enjoyable endeavor.

I made a lot of mistakes with my first business, and learned a lot from them. I keep adding molds and supplies, even though I don't really need them, but to me that's part of the enjoyment of making tackle. I can do new things, even if they're really old things, just new to me. I just bought two old Hilts molds a 3/4 & a 1 ounce bullet head style spinnerbaits, that I didn't even know Hilts had ever produced. They're unique for me, and something I will use. I now look for unique molds, and if the price is reasonable, don't mind taking a risk with trying something new. I got those molds for around $50, so that worked out good.

I don't know if they'll sell, but I'll enjoy making them!  :D
