colorants

What is the shelf life of colorants? If you are not doing any production and only using small amounts is there any reason to pay the extra money for the X2 colorants, thanks

Great question.

The shelf life is years, but if I was truly going to use it that way I would take normal precautions against moisture, rotate it if I'm not using it, etc. Just basic stuff that applies to all pigments to make sure it is ready to use when I'm ready to use it.

For me, the criteria I would be considering in addition to cost would be the quality of the color it produces and
ease of use. X2 is easier to use (less drops and settling) and makes a very rich color.

The cost is more than offset by how much coloring power it has, but if that's not a factor for you then you'll have to decide if the quality (actual color and depth of color) are something you are trying to achieve.

Hopefully others will provide first hand feedback as well. Obviously I'm a fan or we wouldn't have added it. For me the depth and richness of the baits it makes is extremely impressive - thats what I like most about it.

I like the idea and rich colors of the x2. That said, I have enough of the old stuff to last a lifetime and probably wont switch over.

thanks for the info. If quality of color is the difference and not just the concentration then i believe the cost would be justified especially if the shelf life is years.
What precautions do and others do to guard against moisture? I am currently storing them in my garage. I was concerned about this but others assured me that it was not necessary to store them elsewhere.

I think the biggest thing would be to put the metal caps back on them if they were going to sit for a long time.  Short of leaving them outside you're not going to ruin them.  It's just a matter of how much you would have to fuss with them if they sat for 6 months.

A good friend of mine used to sell hand poured baits to different shops in Northern California.  He had a pretty good business going, but he wasn't making too much money for the time he had invested so he shut down the business.  He had boxes of RTV molds, a lot of half used containers of powders and hi-lites and glitters and plastics...even a couple small presto pots.  He also had about 35 - 45 bottles of LC and MF colorants.  I bought it all for $100.

I bought a couple of Del's 5" and 6" senko type molds and started pouring senkos like crazy.  I thought they looked pretty good...two colored baits...swirls, etc.  Over time, however, those baits started looking pretty hokey because the colors started bleeding into one another.  It was about then that I discovered CCM products and found that they label their colorants as bleed or non-bleed.  It makes a big difference knowing what you're dealing with.  I hope CCM continues to come out with new colors because it's my intent to use them before I use anyone else's colorants.

If anyone is interested working out a trade for my colorants and powders / hi-lites for molds let me know.

Sorry, it's just another long winded exhortation on the quality of CCM products.
Until next time.

We have 10 new colors that will be available towards the first of the month.  We should have most of the basics covered by then.  After that we will be focused on the pearl colors and requested colors.  On the requested colors our goal will be to either provide a recipe of the color using existing colorant, or have the color made if we can't come up with a good recipe.

Thanks for the kudos.

Off topic but I aquired some Scuppernog in a lot I bought and love that color.

That would be nice to add along with rootbeer (similar color)

I've got colorant from 82 that my dad was using back then and occasionally I use it. It hasn't given me any problems other than I have to shake the heck out it. Oh and it bleeds like craZY!  ;D ;D
