5 inch stick mold
« on: 06/29/12 10:57 UTC »
Does anyone know of a good 5 inch stick mold for making laminates with my duel injector/blending block?  I see the one on Basstackle but only has one sprew to all the worms. Won't the colrs mix if the worms aren't seperate? Wish Jason had some stick molds on here, i love my carrot and other molds from him but i got a guy that just fishes withe the sticks, Thanx.

If you dont have a second injector or blending block you could take a piece of tin foil and place it between the two halves and shoot the first color. Demold and leave your first color/ half in the mold and then shoot the second color and voila! Laminated sticks! Just be sure to inject your second color a little hotter so it bonds well with the first color/ half.

You can do laminates in a multi cavity mold.  Many of us do this every day.  A $30 blending block and 2 injectors is all you need.  Like viscosity liquid plastic laminates just fine.

The 5" Regular and Skinny Carrots are about the best there is, but they're not essentially an all-round "stick" such as Senko's.

And not to be the voice of opposition, but a multi-cavity mold CAN be laminated with a Dual Injector, just turn the Block 90 degrees to the mold.

Well I stand corrected. I did not think it would laminate correctly. Learn something everyday!

Here's a link to the BEST aluminium to use between you mold halves.

http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/metal-sheeting-864678/

Cut a piece slightly bigger than your mold. Insert it into the mold and press shut. You may need to reopen and cut a small hole at the alignment pins (most of the time you do not). Cut the sprue hole out with a pair of scissors. I then take a razor blade and trim all the sides so it fits exactly..with one exception....The open end of the mold (across from the hinge) I leave about 1" of foil hanging out so I can mark it with the name/size of the  bait the plate matches up with.

This will give you a "custom" laminate plate...so to speak. When you inject you will get both halves of the bait in the first color. I typically shoot a bunch in one color....then reload the mold with the 1/2 of color 1 and then shoot color 2.

Works VERY well with stick baits!!!! And fast!!!!!

The aluminum is 36 gauge is thicker than aluminium foil...but thinner than anything you can find at the hardware store. It's thin enough that it does not affect the clamping of the mold but will last darn near forever. This method works well for any bait that does not have a "top" or "bottom" ..otherwise you either have to remelt half the bait...or use on of the laminate plates (which is a better idea than remelting!).

I still like the laminate plates better when available...but this works well.

You keep coming up with these clever ideas, Andy.  I'm going to give this one a try.  I've got a HobbyLobby a block or two from the office.  I still feel technically challenged...still trying to figure out how to take a decent picture and post it on this site.

I'll get you the other info this weekend.

Until next time.

Shaggy, if I was in Your position (this is just me), I would hook Your friend up with some 5" Carrots in whatever color he likes, while You're searching for the Stick Mold.  This may not "take his mind off of the Sticks", but it may open his eyes to another option.  The CCM Carrot is an extremely versatile bait.

I agree that customers want a bait as close to the original stick as possible.

And as stated, a twinjector works fine on multy cavity molds with one sprue.

I dont want to discuss other brand molds here so will PM you.
