Opaque vs transluscent colors...
« on: 07/03/12 08:56 UTC »
Rather than continue to hijack the other thread Dob has running, just opened this to show an example of what I meant. Here is Rainbow Trout in opaque and GHOST... The guys in the stained or dirty water like the pronounced color where the clear water guys prefer the GHOST or subtle version.... Fish seem to agree with anglers....

Those swim baits are of the hook. Nice work
Love the color in them. They will pop more when you dip them in a clear coat.

True Peter. I stopped dipping mine though as the action was suffering. The dip took away the extra side to side shimmy that seems to attract the fish even more.

Stinks though as the baits dipped are off the chain looking. Gives them that depth that just is killer looking.

Jim,

What are you using to keep your eyes on if you're not dipping?

Jim,

What are you using to keep your eyes on if you're not dipping?

Just dipping head area. Will stop that soon, using glue.. There is a nice indent in the bait for the eye to sit and glue to go. I have several with the eyes glued and then just eyes dipped but not glued. Glue lasts WAY longer. Just dipping allows eyes to slide around and also tear through plastic and fall off.

Nice!!!! You will notice a lot of BIGGER manufacturers of swimbaits and even most hand pour companies only make one or the other. Just weird to me!

Lots are transluscent since the companies are out west.

we made a batch that we just hit with hi-lites & a tinyyyy amount of .015 & .040 flake. it was  a new adventure for me to make since i only used 3-4 drops of color in a cup of plastic when we made ones with some color to them.

Really nice looking baits there.

My crappie plastics really are preferred as transparent colors unless I am fishing some serious murkiness in the water, then the opaque colors get hung on the jig. I think that solid colors play on the reverse contrast idea, especially when panfish start studying baits.

Thanks...

I had a thought about this while grilling...  :D Most small minnows and baitfish are actually transluscent when smaller and then get more opaque the larger they get. Doubt the fish think this way though, just me!!!

We have lots of stained and "dirty" water here. Junebug and green pumpkin rule....

Jim, what glue are you using?  I have tried Zap A Gap and am thinking about trying Mend It to see if I am happier.  I can not get Zap to bind.

I have found it depends on your plastisol as to how well the glue holds. Weird but I have tested a lot.

I use super glue brush on, It is a purple bottle. Just be sure to coat the eye socket well and they eye will rarely come out. I have some swims from 3 years ago that still have the eyes on rock solid. Just found them and I was impressed.

Thank you my friend I'll try that.  Does the super glue bleed the eye colors at all?  I have had some issues with red and blue eyes with Zap.  By the way, "translucent" should be renamed to  "out west".  My best selling color locally is a phantom rainbow trout I pour(and you can't get any further west than where we are).  There's a total of 2 drops of color in 4 cups of plastic.   ;)
