Real excited about the Chub Grub
« on: 09/09/12 21:30 UTC »
I started injecting the 3" chub grub about a month ago up here in Northeast PA. I've been pouring/painting/tying jigs for a few years now and have always been put off having to buy so many trailers especially in New York and Canada where muskie and northerns just gut my trailers. Two of my favorite baits were a Yamamoto twin tail grub or for really hot action days the Strike King Rage Tail chunk. Tough or cold days and a case plastics chunk or KVD chunk gets the nod. I was so excited to see that the chub grub has the twin tails of the Yamamoto grub and the "action ridge" on the legs like the Rage tail. I immediately purchased a mold. Shot some green pumpkin w/ green & black flake and headed to a local lake that is only 160 acres but is a known hog producer. However, it is so heavily fished, it is usually near impossible to get bit during the day. I usually only fish it at night. First 30 minutes in the daylight on the water produced 4 nice bass with one going 4-10. Was just going to try it out w/ no real expectations of getting bit. Headed out a couple days later at 9:30-12:00 PM and landed 13 bass (10 over 3 lbs) and a 26" muskie all in the moonlight. Using a black & Blue chub that night on a black/blue jig. Thank you Jason for such an excellent bait. You have my business.

My favroite jig is the Do-it standard weedless bass model in 3/8 oz. I use trokar hooks and I sunk the hook eye deeper into the head to resist snags better. added a wire trailer keeper that I bend from spinnerbait wire. Green pumpkin barbwire & pumpkin barbwire w/ green flake is my favorite color skirt. It has been a fantastic "jack of all trades" jig. It swims, crawls, & skips great.

Good post, Chase, and welcome to the forum.  It sure sounds like you know what you're talking about.

(Guys, this is exactly what I was talking about in my "Rigging" post earlier today.)
Until next time.

You should try the 4" as well.  It's good stuff!

Thanks Denny. I've been obsessive about getting those jigs just the way I want them for about 2 years now. Got sick of buying and losing factory jigs. When Trokar came out with the bulk jig hooks I almost cried. They really make a difference especially w/ fluorocarbon when swimming jigs on long distance casts. What "rigging" post where you referring to? Couldn't find it. Was interested in reading up.

Found it. :) Even though I'm new, I agree. Rigging and bait modification pics and discussion could be huge.

Sorry Chase, I saw your earlier post and went looking for my "rigging" post...I couldn't find it either until a couple minutes ago.  I still like the idea of a rigging page, but the post didn't get much enthusiasm.  Others either were not interested, or it could be I posted it on the wrong page.

I've been pouring and tying my own jigs for about 4 - 5 years.  Before that it was fly tying and now its pouring plastics.  There's a certain satisfaction in catching a fish on something you've made.
Until next time.
