anyone know of a great tail on a bait that doesn't tear when a bluegill (or pinfish in saltwater) hits it, say on a 3 or 4 inch bait (they have to be strong, wide enough)??? I am aware of BP's triple ripple and Southern Pro's triple tail and Northland's twintail grubs.   Love the action of a triple tail or double tail (meaning one tail, in two pieces) Pics would be appreciated

I'll just hang up and listen...

Mr. Pat, I'd surely give You some insight or suggestion if I had any, but I have limited use of Curltails other than 1.5" and 8", although I do own a few 2" and 2.5".  Curltails are abundant in all shapes, sizes and colors, even densities, styles and countless variations, so aside from guys posting about their use of them (and Bait Requests for other variations), I know that people use them and catch fish on 'em.  I've never caught much with the 3"-4" Curltails.  I've given quite a bit of thought to their application in my style of fishing, along with mentally watching myself present them (underwater perspective) to try to adopt this common-size bait into my Bag of Tricks, but I can't get myself away from so much that I already have that produces, to add another piece, when my success with this size of Curltail has been minimal.  I assure You, however, I'm always watchful for the opportunity to do so, to use some variation of the Curltail to fill a niche.  I sure wish I could give You more than that.

BKJ, I have slaughtered (at times) trout, reds, flounder on 3 and 4 inch curly tais..reg and triple tail. Have problems with the triple tails being pecked off by baitfish (have had similar prob. w/tubes.) companies have fixed tube issues, not so much with grubs. When u make triple tail thick enough, you lose precious action, esp when u fish it slow on bottom... thinking about going to a splittail grub, 2 instead of 3 fingers. Still has action, but won't tear as easily.

what do u think??

2 fingers instead of 3, would make the base of each finger larger and probably more substantial, possibly making it more difficult for small fish to tear the fingers off.  Does a 2 or 3-finger-tailed Curltail have any advantages over the "standard" solid-tailed Curltail?  Is the action more fluid?  More vibration?  I would think the solid tail would have more thump.  Have You fished both, or all 3 types, head-to-head?

I wondered, a few nights ago, if You can remelt those "Z" baits that stretch like latex.  I thought about buying a few packs to try remelting for my own use.  I'd like to find out what substance, or substance additive (if added to standard soft plastic), is used in those baits.  Pinfish, Butterfish and Croakers, even Oysterfish, wouldn't stand a chance with that stuff.

Well, if my cel was "smart" or had an "i" in it's name, I may be able to click on that link and check it out, but my cel is a Rugby and is probably classified as "stupid" (non-smart) or "old school"...it even has buttons that click when You push them.  This phone is like an AK47 in a world of MiniGuns...clunky, yet tough and reliable, simple..."Nooo other cel phone'll get onboard MY pocket!  Because they're Reliable!  Durable!"  I'll have to write that URL down and enter it manually...standby one.

I actually like those Curltails.  I'll take a pack of 3" and 4" in Emerald Shiner, Crappie Minnow and Parakeet!  Never saw a CT with actual "grub" legs on the body, either.  Neat bait.  I did notice that with the legs down, the tail was also curled down.  Not sure why, but the small (or very large) CT's I use, I prefer them tail up.  Maybe that's what I did wrong...

Roger on'na tail up.  I may be slightly more persuaded if a Curltail, maybe 3.5", had a Tail that would suit my tastes, along with a body.  Maybe a 2" Flattened Body, maybe like the Glider.  The Tail would have to be of a slick design...maybe, overall, slightly slimmer than the popular wide tail, but coming to a point, slimming down "early", then finished with a forked, Fluke-style Tail.  I'd have the body wide/flat (horizontal) while the tail was up (vertical), not the body horizontal with the tail horizontal (tail "to the side").  I'd make the body about 1/2" wide and maybe the thickness of the 3" Skinny, just over 1/4" high.  Again, 1/2" horizontal-width with the tail up...widest in the 1st half of the body, 2nd half of the body would be tapering down to the tail.  Just enough taper in the forward-end of the front half to narrow down for a Jighead.  Widest portion of the tail about 3/8" (or slightly less, maybe 5/16"), standard thickness, then narrowing down to maybe 1/8" wide but slightly thicker to give it a tinge more meat/muscle for short-strikes, then about the last 3/8" of the tail almost just like a Fluke, forked, almost round "fingers", fingers slightly thicker than the widest (and most thin) part of the tail.  Just my $0.02...and I'd take one of these in at least a 2-3 cavity!

Actually, You now have me thinking.  I just ordered some Mend-It for a few Bait Projects, and I believe I know know what material I'll be using for my "custom copy molds".  I'm going to work on this bait.  If I can get the right parts, I'll make a mold for it...and send You some.
