How in the World Do Some Things Happen...?
« on: 10/04/12 20:16 UTC »
Because my system is quite imperfect...I need a good Thermometer, and my heating practices have obviously been 2nd Rate...I bought quite a bit of store-boughts solely for the purpose of remelting, of course for personal use.  The bulk of them are Zoom Trick Worms, Yum F2 Dinger 5", and Mann's 3" Stingray Grubs (ascending in that order).  I bought each of these brands/styles with intentions on blending some, adding this or that, and 1 or 2 to use "straight" (of course, a laminate would become 1 color, which has been considered quite carefully).

I got a little time this evening to hit the shop for some remelting.  I "thought-up" several colors during this hitch, so I started with Mann's 3" SRG in "Avocado".  The 3" are fairly small, but they're fat.  I cut up 50...F-I-F-T-Y...of these baits, added a little stabilizer, and onward with the heat.  I'm not done with this 1st mix yet, I know I can get 1 more shot out of it (4" Skinny, 4 cavity, thank You very much)(:D), possibly 2 more shots of the Skinny4.  As of right now, I have 2 shots/8 baits of 4" Skinny, and 2 baits (not 2 shots) of 3" Skinny, curing.  The 3" Skinnies got the tail-end of the injector and only managed 2 full baits.  SO, I have 10 fairly small baits done, with 4 more to come, MAYBE 4 more after that...out of F-I-F-T-Y 3" SRG's.  I know the runners and sprues eat up a little plastic, but what I'm seeing hardly seems to derive from 50 of those fat little baits.  The "Avocado" did, however, seem to have alot of bubbles in them, some of the tails were almost 1 big bubble...while the White (White is opaque, so it's "hard to tell"), Smoke, Chartreuse, and Green, look nearly perfect.

On a more positive note, I just started oiling my "Curing Pan's" surface so the baits slide easier, encouraging easier straightening for curing...I just used Menhaden Oil since I've got a bunch of it.

My question is...where can I get some of that "Plastic Stretcher/Expander"?  Or does cheaper plastic degrade/evaporate/condense upon remelting?

Honestly, I can't figure out for the life of me why you don't just buy raw plastic. It's got to get pretty expensive go buy new baits and remelt them. Just saying.

I've bought a total of 10 gallons of CCM plastic...three 2.5 gallon "Hard" and one 2.5 gallon "Regular", then I sold 1 of the Hard's.  Because my system is so flawed, I've wasted about 1 full 2.5 gallon container...every bait has turned cloudy because I'm not getting my plastic to 350.  When I do get a good thermometer, I'll be using my liquid again, but I'm not wasting another drop until my system is right.  That initial heating will make You or break You.

Yeah, sounds like you could benefit from a good infrared or probe type. I know there are differences in opinions on which type is best, but either would be better than nothing. I have both and they both have their uses. Seems like in the long run it would be cheaper to go ahead and get one or the other rather than buying new baits and remelting. There was a thread here not too long ago about just this subject where someone posted a link for a probe type with a digital readout that I purchased. Less than 20.00 including shipping. Works quite well, if not quite as fast as an infrared.

Walmart even has a probe type for 10-15 dollars. I use it for microwave cooking and infrared for presto pots. Not to argue with Andrew, but the presto is constantly stirred, it's my opinion that the infrared works fine in that situation. sorry Andrew.
On a side note, I know you have inquired about the presto in the past. There is very little to no bubbles from it being stirred. It's a huge plus over the microwave, and you'll have consistent colors in a batch of baits since you're making one large batch. $250 is a lot of bones, but i'm no fabricator. Buying one premade was worth it to me.

Roger on'nat...I'm getting mine soon.  There are a few other things that fed the remelt thing, but were only sidenotes to the decision, with possible added benefits, no less.  I've seen Yum's Attractant work...I bought a bit of their baits, and plan on using them in the Salt, probably when the bite gets tough, especially in cold water (that's coming).  I'm a fan of a particular brand of plastics, I've been using their baits for some time now, and keep buying them so I can build my stock to be remelted...I'm also about to copy a few key baits, but that's a story for another day.

If I were in this thing to make money, I'd have been all over it...but I work in the Gulf and don't plan on putting it down to retail tackle.  With SOO much I've learned, I've made a ton of mistakes, and while experimenting can be costly, it can also teach one plenty...and maybe provide something You can't buy separately.

I may order a thermometer today...I'm thinking it's time, really.  I think that correctly adding a hit of the gorgeous CCM plastic to these oober-nasty plastics could make it come alive...hmmm...

I've searched, in my travels with work, many Walmarts and Hardware Stores, for thermometer options.  All the probe-types I've seen don't get up to 350, strangely.  I've strongly considered the Presto, but it seems like there has to be quite a bit of plastic there...my biggest mixes may be 14-16 oz.s.

I have made as small as two cups in mine. You'll want to put it in a leaning position so all the plastic settles on one side at rest.
