3.5" swim shad in the salt
« on: 10/21/12 20:55 UTC »
Target specks here in south La average fish between 12" and 15" I know bigger fish won't have a problem with it but will these smaller more favorable for the table fish have a problem eating it. I normally use commercially made baits in the 3" to 3.5" range with a flat type tail. What kind of thump does this bait produce?

I suspect the 3" ST Chub Grub..very similar tail and thump...thinner body...would be a good choice.

I've caught a lot of small (10 to 16")  largemouth and smallmouth on this bait ( and some really nice ones too!).

Is the bait the Specks eating a thin minnow shape....or a more shad like shape?

A few that come to mind are matrix shad, hybrid flurry and saltwater assassin sea shad. Trout have teeth so you go thru plenty baits. The carrots will work and they are on my list to buy just want something with a tail that makes noise. I also use these baits on a saltwater spinnerbait.

I live near the Gulf in Florida, 3.5 swimshad is a great bait in saltwater, one of the best when fish (reds, trout, whatever) are chasing baitfish and ...when they are not chasing. Be sure and get the 3.5 with thinner tail if you are buying a mold, so bait has action on slow retrieve or when you are bumpin' it on the bottom.

Specks from 12"-15" won't have any problem get'n that size Swim Shad in their mouth.  Their mouths are about proportionate to a Walleye, and they're going to hit it in the Head most times anyway, to try to kill it.  One of the main baits we threw at them for many-many years were H&H Cocahoes and the small Trout didn't have an issue with those...they're moderately thick-bodied baits.  Out of all the 4" Skinnies that were torn-up on October 10 (that are in pans in my shop, drying off moisture as we speak, to be remelted), every one of them are SHREDDED on the Top Half or Top 2/3rd's.  They nail, or Staple, that bait at the Head most of the time.  I'd get that 3.5" and roll with it!
