!st attempt not bad
« on: 01/01/13 09:43 UTC »
Got around to pouring my 1st jigs for the upcoming season, I use plastics to a fault and this year I gave jigging a new look and had a successful time with it so I decided to go all in with a furnace, Do-It molds and all the goodies that make a quality jig here's my 1st go round, the fish pic was the 1st time with a jig:

I chose to use the new Teflon pins and glue my weed guards in after powder painting and was happy with that decision. The top pic I just stuck the guards in for the pic, the upper left jig in the top pic is a custom stand up jig.

Those look very nice.
Is that the football jig that takes the 60 deg hook. ?
I too use the Teflon insert then paint. Then glue in the guards.  I have had no trouble yet.   My grandpa is capable of molding the guard in and painting without burning the weed guard but he has done it for thirty years.

You can't beat catching a fish on something you made.  Nice jigs, Chris.
Until next time.

Hey Justin yes its the Mustad 32798BLN 60 degree Flat Eye Jig Hook, I'm new to lead but I gave it allot of thought about cast in or glue in the guard I did quite a bit of research and seemed to lean that gluing in was a cleaner look and the guard didn't spread out due to the heat. I used Loc-Tite Gel and I gave one a torture test to see what it was going to take to have the guard come off and it took way more than would occur in the field under normal conditions.

I use the same. Yes it's a much cleaner look I think too.  I'm startling to like lead more then plastics.  Right now

.  I paint cranks too.  Not very good at it. But it's all alot of fun.

I ordered that mold over the weekend.  It looks like a very good jig.

I have some pics I will post. Tonight.  I'm not that great at it.  Yet.
Go to Dakotalakes.com. He has some videos and sells blanks.  There are couple other places that sell too.  I can't remember the link. I'll check when I get home.  One of the them sells cheap blanks defects and out of stock stuff to practice on.  I started on old junk cranks.

But. I can tell you it's a blast.

The first pic (the one with the fish) was all I needed to see.

Great job!

For your first jigs that's pretty impressive.
I just use the alum. pins and take them out before I powder coat them. Then bake them at 400 degrees for half an hour. Then take a 1/8 drill bit to clean them up and put super glue gel in to hold the weed guards. Never had one come out yet. Then for you fly fisherman I tie the skirts on. Never had a skirt come off or needed adjusted. It may be over kill but I like it better. I think the trick is to bake it hot and air cool. It will keep the pain from chipping.

Ditto re tying the skirts on, Lemar.  Personally, I like using a stronger thread...something along the lines of Flymaster Plus.  A couple drops of head cement  and that jig should last a long time.
Until next time.
