Thinking about the croaker
« on: 03/14/13 00:11 UTC »
So my father keeps watching the video for the croaker mold and he desperately wants one. I'm still a little up in the air about it because frogs are not really big producers here in Pennsylvania (at least in my opinion). Anyone from near PA care to chime in with an opinion?

I'm not from there, but I'd get one for my Dad, my Bro.  I sure wish my Dad lived closer...we'd fish often.

I would not get one bigger than 3". I've had issues in the past getting the feet to come out right. Its a very fun bait to fish.  Not from PA either.

well I'm from SE Pa and I throw frogs & top water baits no reason Pa won't produce - now that all hinges on the body of water you fish but for the most part our local lakes have good vegetation and produce very good results join the EPFR.NET this is by far the best local fishing forum in you area and search the topic you should find good info there.

I'm not from PA but I would definitely recommend a croaker mold. I honestly didn't think I would catch anything on the frogs, because I'd never used any. The mold looked cool, so I bought it as my first one. I ended up getting the small 3" version. I don't regret it at all. The frogs were my go-to bait last year and I caught fish on them every time.

By all means get the frog.  I fish in Ohio and use them a bunch and they work great. I catch more on a 3.5 version than any other.

I have the 4" swim toad.  Though not in PA, our 2 biggest producing plastics are frogs and tubes.  And apparently pretty much everything will hit frogs... we've caught bass, musky, pike, and even walleye.  I say go for a 4".  Just my experience with retail plastics... we got fewer hits on 2.5" and 3" frogs than the bigger ones.  Of course the 1.75" is a whole other story, that little thing is rad and catches fish.  :)

I have the 4 inch croaker with no trouble getting the feet to fill in.  That is a function of the temperature of the plastic or possibly some air in your plastic - most likely temp.

With that said - this bait is a great trailer on the swim jig and on the chatterbait.  Probably some other uses too.  I have caught huge fish on top water with it as well.

I my friend live in Delaware not far from you. My friends and I only fish with the frog. We crush the bass just about every time we go out. The frog is such a versatile bait. You can toss it up on the bank and just hop it off, through the lilies, hidrilla, over and under logs rarely do i get snagged unless it wraps around a limb. We all use to have a huge tackle box and we all have given all our lures away. alls we go out with now is a bag of croakers hooks and bullet waits just in case their not hittin on the top. I have not had any experience with the toad, however the croaker with the paddle feet is just too irresistible for bass motor boatin across the top of the water. The only warning I have is if you order this mold you may throw away your tackle box. i have 4" mold melt hot shoot fast thats how my feet fill in.
Nothin better than paddlin my Jackson Coosa and motor boatin a frog.

Bareknuckle, my old man and I are fishing partners and it's great. I wouldn't want anyone else on the water with me. He has such a wealth of knowledge about just about everything. Plus we balance each other out because he's Ike level firey sometimes and I'm very calm.

Tubes nail'em here too. And my Uncle is a big frogger and he has the biggest fish in the family. So it looks like we'll add the croaker sometime soon, probably 3.5in, maybe when we add the 7in Ribbon tail.

You'll love the 3.5 inch Croaker! I live in Alabama and the bass down here love frogs! When you hear them singing and croaking all along the bank, then you know it's time to give it a try! I absolutely love my Croaker mold!
