The 700 series HB screens are too small for use with Si. My buddy has an HDS5 Lowrance and same deal with that little screen

I have a HB 898c Si and the wider screen works well. Screen on my older unit is not that bright and that is why they make the new HD units that are brighter.

2d is good in both HB and Lowrance HDS
Di in Lowrance HDS is much better than the HB
Si is similar in both.

The new Raymarine Dragonfly for $649 looks real nice but has no Si.

Would I be better off with di and a larger screen and not si? I also want good mapping feature which I will probably need a chip for that. Should I stay away from Ebay when buying?

If I could go back I would save for a couple of more months and get the 1198. The 898 I got works great but the bigger screen would be nice. When Im dock fishing I can turn on SI and take a look under the dock and if I dont like what I see I can move to the next dock. To me SI is more useful than DI. Remember with SI I can see up to 120 ft on BOTH side of my boat. Slso I got a deal on ebay and saved $400. Ebay is great i can buy new reels also and save from paying retail usually saving $30-$50. Good luck

I find side scan much more valuable to me.  It is hard to explain, but the way the side scan presents the image gives me a much better concept of what is down there, structure wise.  I often turn side scan on; full screen; one side only; with a relatively narrow width. Especially in areas I am familiar with, ( ie. channel drops ). This will really show what structure is there and often ( as in Matt's picture ) larger fish, or schools of fish / bait relating to the structure.  Remember; the smaller area you look at the larger the structure will appear.  This is the basic concept behind the Humminbird Surround Image.  It being real time.

After hearing you guys I'm going to try and go up to the 800 series. If I spend anymore than that, I'll be fighting for my life! Since this is a more powerful unit which battery do y'all use? Starting or trolling?

I run my finders off of my starting battery.  They draw very little power.  Had one on all day, and forgot to turn it off that night.  Next day, launched the boat for the tourney and was worried, but the motor fired right up.  Didn't act like the battery was down at all.  Joey

Electrical interference can be an issue with depth finders.  Some big engines and depth finders don't play well together.  Some 12 volt trolling motors will  interfere with depth finder performance; esp. when the voltage starts to get pulled down.  I run my depth finders off the big motor battery; wired with heavier gauge wire; to a power panel just for the electronics.

I bought 898 and installed in over the past weekend. I haven't had the opportunity to go out and run it yet, that's coming soon!
