Ultra Minnow
« on: 04/02/13 16:19 UTC »
I wanted to get your ideas on something.  I had bought the Do-It Ultra Minnow mold after seeing it in a Do-It catalog.  I saw it and could not stop thinking about it.  I just had to buy it.  I messed around with it when I first got it, but then put it away.  I recently took it out and decided to play with it some more.  Here is a pic of some of the jigs I have recently made:

Wilks19 made the skirts for these.  I was thinking of using these as a swim jig, but was told last night these won’t really work as a good swim jig.  Now that I heard that, it makes sense.  It did take the wind out of my sails.  LOL!  I was looking online for other uses for these and it looks like a big use for them is as hair jigs.  Here is a hair jig I tied up after first getting the mold.

I might have already posted this back when I first made it, so sorry if it looks familiar.  Does anyone have or use these jig heads and how do you use them?

Thanks in advance!

Chuck

I use them with plastic trailers. A three or four inch boot tail worm works good. Also a swimmin grub or tandum tail grub.

I thought I saw somewhere a video of the Walleye guys taking a liking to them but by the location of the line tie I would say it's an open water jig it just screams snag me in wood/weed/pads

They are used by landlocked striper and hybrid fishermen with bucktails or twist-tailed grubs.  Esp. in tailrace currents.  Also; along the coast as ling jigs.  They are popular on big umbrella rigs trolled as well.

Paul's got it about right... It is one of our better selling jig lines and I would say most of them go to guys tying hair jigs for either Striper, Walleye, or some saltwater species and are many times fishing in some type of current.

Nice swim jig! Add a twin tail to it and that ought to drive the smallies nuts!

Thanks for the input and kind words guys!  I am going to make them with both bucktails and rubber skirts.  We will test them out and see how we do with them.  Find out which one works better and produces the bigger fish.  Stay tuned for my results.  Thanks again!

After seeing them in your post...I'm thinking deep water vertical jigging for walleyes up by the dam!

Moving that jig to the top of my "wish list"!

Very nice jigs.

It's a good mold and easy to pour.  Did you powder coat the head, Chuck?
Until next time.

Thanks guys!

These should work great for vertical jigging Andrew!

Denny, yes I did powder coat them.  That is the Pro-Tec watermelon red powder paint.  It comes out pretty sweet.  This one and copper are my favorites.

looks like the spro buck tail jig but better.  if it works the same as the spro then it will suspend horizontally in the water.  Great for jigging deep schools.

Thank you, long shot! That is the only buck tail I have tied with this head. I am off tomorrow and now I might have to breakout the tails and tie a few more.  ;D
