Don't make blackbird pie
« on: 04/07/13 21:12 UTC »
Uncle shot a bunch of blackbirds for fun, bout thirty with three shots.  I'll try anything once, and cleaned the critters and made blackbird pie.  Homemade crust and all.  Don't try it.  Just don't. Joey

You convinced me.

We have a winter crow problem here in Rochester. Two years ago an archery shop decided to spoonsor a crow hunt in the area to try to help break up the large flocks. They did good on crow numbers and they even breasted out about thirty of them, marinaded them and then put them on a charcoal grill. Our local paper reported on this venture up to the point of grilling so we didn't get any feed-back on the crow feed. I bumped into the owner of that shop a few days ago and asked how his crow BBQ went. You reflect his sentiments.

The old saying of "Having to eat Crow" has truth.

We have a bunch of turkeys around my place.  There might be more interest in them than either blackbirds or crow.
Until next time.

About 35 years ago we were out runnng our traps and shot a few blackbirds. Decided we'd cook'em over an open fire on the creek bank. Those things were some kind of awful!

My family loves to eat what I catch or shoot.  They love game, but blackbirds aren't game.  Should never be considered edible.  I get a wild hair every once in a while and this was one I regret.  Basskat, you make me feel better, since you also tried the flying $#&?.  If you ever need to talk about it, you can call me.  Joey

I plan on sticking with fowl that ain't foul. Crows, blackbirds, coot...ducks in general for that matter, all fail to make my fowl list.

I understand snow geese should be included in the "don't eat this" list.  Several say  " flying carp" in reference to them.

I'll take the snow geese and bone the breast meat out. When I get about ten pounds of it, I grind it and mix some very lean ground pork with it and make snack sticks. They are every bit as delicious as venison sticks. I had some summer sausage that was made using ground goose instead of the venison or beef and it was to die for. ...next on my list in fact. And pressed jerky made using ground goose meat is something else too.

Duck tastes like bad liver and since I don't eat nuts or guts, duck is out.

Snow Geese are ok...but we call Canadian Flying Carp....and carp tastes a heck of a lot better than Canadian Goose (in my opinion).

Good corn feed Canadian's are good...but the ones that follow the manure trucks on the farms.....they taste like....

Same thing with wild turkeys. Those "cow poo" turkeys are horrid.

We're not allowed to have cows where I live so we don't have "cow poo" wild turkeys.  A more apt description of our turkeys would be "Canadian Goose poo" turkeys.  It's all academic though because we can't shoot the turkeys...California don't ya know.
Until next time.

Denny....

Ya gotta start to hand feed those ditch chickens. When they get real accustomed to having you there with a handful of corn, be sure to have a night stick in the other. Whack. Instant dinner. Lots of soup.
