Stop the Bleeding?
« on: 04/13/13 02:54 UTC »
Alot of the favorite colorants are bleeding colors, and store-bought single-color baits are also bleeders.  I'm going to be applying some things in an uncommon way, but there will be some bleeding that I'll just have to accept.  This got me thinking...

What is the chemical difference between bleeding and non-bleeding colorants?  If it's a certain component, can that chemical component be bought and added to a mix that has bleeding colorant already in it, to stop the bleeding?  This would be a very lucrative business decision for the industry.

Many of the bleeders also are what we call color changing colors as well. Motor Oil is a great example. I know of one example where a company eliminated the bleeding in Motor Oil but it also eliminated the color changing aspect of the color and it was the changing part of the color that people wanted.

I'm thinking that the chemical end of the equation for no-bleeding is one of two things: either the color changes away from what's wanted ; or the cost to attain what's wanted makes the coloravailability unrealistic.

I have some bleeding colors and just accept the limitations of what comes with using them.

That's a good question, Bones, and better left answered by someone a whole lot smarter than me.

What got me stirred up was the title of your post, "Stop The Bleeding".  There for an moment I thought you got bit by one of those sharks you're so afraid of. :D
Until next time.

Denny, that's pretty funny...!o!...but I don't fear sharks.  What I see...Deuteronomy 6:16.  I also don't fear HIV/Aids...same reference.

Thanks Mr. Tom.  I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison of a bleeding Green Pumpkin and a Green Pumpkin NB, same brand...then see the "ingredients list".  Thinking-up some remelt colors for a few of my customs got me thinking along these lines.  I did come up with a pretty killer alternative (and a way around the bleeding), however, for a particular color.

I have to agree that the bleeding issue can really spoil a day when a box of baits is opened up and the first thing that comes to mind is "What the.....?". Had that happen with a red. Really did a job on a whole box, including the plastic of the box. Now I know which ones like to bleed and keep them in zip locks, then in their own comparment in the box.

Bleeding colors are a dye and non bleeders are a pigment. Certain colors were developed with bleeding components so they can't be duplicated any other way. Motor oil has a bleeding chartreuse that give it the classic look. Frank

I've read alot of guys using Scuppernog.  I'm taking a few steps back, at the moment, re-adjust my scope.  The irons in the fire aren't quite hot enough yet.
