RTV Mold Making
« on: 05/04/13 16:18 UTC »
Does anyone have any experience using RTV silicone to make molds? I made a prototype lure and made a mold out of water putty. It broke so I decided I have had enough with the water putty and would try RTV. My question is, can an injection mold be made out of RTV or is it only for hand pours? Figured I would ask before wasting the RTV since it is not cheap. Thanks in advance!

I read somewhere that an injection mold can be made from rtv but thats way beyond me. The hand pour open molds are what I am most familiar with and even those challenge me. Rtv is way too spendy for my imagination so I leave it alone.

You can make two part molds its not easy but can be done. Look up solar pro on you tube he has it mastered. If its a hard bait that makes it soooooo much easier but soft plastics are tuff. I can help but would need more detail on the bait

Thanks guys! I have watched some videos on YouTube and THINK I know what to do.  I hope it comes out correctly otherwise it was a $29.99 mistake.  ;D I got the high strength Alumilite and it take 18 hours to cure. I made the first half of the mold last night so it has only been a little over 9 hours.

MO, I am molding a clay master. I made a box out of duct tape and cardboard.  I put some of my kids play doh in the bottom of the box along with some nuts to serve as registers. I smashed the clay master into the play doh. I then mixed up the Alumilite and poured it in the box. I will keep you updated on the progress.

i would recomend going to smoothon.com and i use mold star 15 it sets up in 4 hours and is a 1-1 mix ratio i have reproduced several baits and i use smooth cast300 and featerlight floating resins one thing to keep in mind is if it's a thin mold you may want to develop a wire harness to attach your hooks to,my way of thinking with the harness is if the bait breaks as long as the fish stays hooked you have him.......

You make a RTV mold very cheap. Go to the dollar store and buy a plastic bowl with a top. Get 5 pieces of wood. to make four sides and a top. Go to ACE or some other Hardware store and get a tube of 100% silicone. make sure it's 100% not some other junk. Clear is what I use. Make a model of the lure out of clay the kind you bake to make it hard. Seal the clay with something. I use Mod podge. Use the top of bowl as the bottom of the mold Make a frame out of the wood. Use a clamp or two to hold the frame together.  Use a bigger piece wood or something to make a top that will cover the whole frame. Make sure you have enough silicone to fill the mold to the top. Take the bowl and mix silicone and a 1/4 tp of water together. Do not over do the water. May want to use a vapor mask or a fan. Don't do this in the house.  It will turn the silicone from clear to an off white color. Make sure all of the silicone has water in it. Fill the frame full to the top of the watered silicone. Push the model down in to the mold until the top of the model is even with the top of the mold. Then take the top piece of the mold and lay it on top and push down on it until it is even with the frame. The water will make the silicone get hard in a little over an hour; without the water you would just have a mess. Remove the frame ( I always give it two hours to be sure) cut any silicone off from around the edges. Remove the model and your ready to pour.  I then make a few lures and try them out. See if the fish like them. If so I them take a few I have made and make a mult. cavity out of water putty. That has a top and bottom to it. Never done it with silicone. I know if that's what your were asking about. But I thought you might want a cheaper way of doing it.
