Ice fishing plastic bait molds
« on: 07/15/13 18:28 UTC »
Hey does anyone know where I can get a mold like microspoon's domination fry? I have found many others that are somewhat similar. It's similar to caney creeks nano fry, but with a stinger like tail. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

Try BassTackle. Snoop thru the smaller molds and you'll probably run across it.

Jacobs  makes a dynamite ice stinger in 2 sizes.

I have looked through basstackle and have found one similar to the domination fry but the body on it is too long...I have also looked at Jacobs and have one of his molds. It's the nano head from caney creek and the stinger tail like the tail on Jacobs baits small shad body stinger tail baits. I've asked here at caney creek if they could possibly change the tail on a nano mold for me, but they don't.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Changing the mold cutting format is not an easy thing to accomplish.

I've had outstanding success with the Nano. I really don't like long tails because the gills just keep biting only the tails. You can watch them on the camera just picking at the tail ( like on the Jacob's grub with long tail).

Thanks for the link. Now I can maybe be more help.

Try looking at Jacobs 1 1/2" stinger with the grub body at 3/16" diameter. I have this mold and I cut the tail off leaving the last body segment attached to the tail. Add a couple 3mm eyes and clear dip. Its a work of art.

I also have the 1" ice stinger from Jacobs. You can shorten the body by about 1/3 of its length, clear dip, add 3mm eyes and re-dip in clear. Again, another killer plastic for ice angling. The ice stinger is also available in a slightly longer version at 1 1/4" and slightly thicker body. The tail piece is just a hair longer as well.

I really like the results using the 1 1/2" stinger with the segmmented grub body for baits of this type, but that  1" ice stinger has a tail that is unlike any other I have seen. That bait made using the tail of the 1 1/2" stinger is my favorite when dock hopping in the late fall/early winter, but when the fish get tight chops that other one based on the ice stinger is darned hard to beat. If you are looking at ice-specific, I'd suggest the ice stinger and do the double dip. The first dip is just to add some surface area for the eyes to adhere to.

Both of these are super baits. The 1 1/2" stinger is a dandy summer bait too. Sunfish will get all over it.

All the above mention molds work very well for ice fishing, I don't get crazy with smaller baits, I shoot single color, no eyes, no dip. As in the PM I sent I believe it is the Jacobs bait

Thanks for the great info....I have had great success with the domination fry. I have 2 wall hangers from this plastic bait from last winter! The stinger tail on the domination fry can't be beat. Every gill, crappie, or perch I've caught has had the whole bait in its mouth. They cannot stay away from it! Hence why I want to make my own...Yes I will eventually get the nano mold, but I want....NEED the domination fry mold lol. I'm gearing up for the wintering and my buddy and I competitively ice fish here in WI and I need to stock pile my baits up before winter hits. Cuz we all know it will be here before we know it!

I have Jacbos 1 1/2 shad body stinger tail mold and I've caught many crappies this spring on it!...I was looking at getting the jacobs stinger tail 3/4 and also the ball tail looks interesting. On bass tackle there is a tiny stinger swim bait. It has the tail of the domination fry but the body is too big...any others I have missed?

Mr. Weltzing63,

I totally understand your wanting to find this bait or the mold to create this bait, but I'm not sure that I can again tolerate any of your hastening the coming of WINTER... so please keep it to a minimum if you will.

just sayin'  ;)

Brent,
We have done the NAIFC and now new this year is the hard water maniacs tourneys taking place of the WIFL circuit. We are still pretty new to the circuits, but have done some in the past including the NAIFC championship last year.

Yeah...all this talk of winter gave me an anxiety attack!

The river just finally came down and the bass fishing is excellent.
