Grandson & Grandpa
« on: 08/21/13 01:32 UTC »
There is a small lake by work and on Tuesday &  Thursday after grandpa's  has oxygen treatment he brings his grandson to the lake. In the past month and a half I have talked with them when ever I see them. Grandpa should me a bait made out of  1/4"copper tubing 2.5" long and has 45 degree angle on one end and a straight cut at the other. The tie point is the top tip of the 45 the hole were the hook and split ring is on the bottom. It casts along distance and has a lot of action. Yesterday I gave the grandson some 5"skinny carrots and some md5xc. The glow in his eyes and twenty questions really made my day. I have no doubt a Jr. bait maker was started yesterday when I gave him the web site and a lot of info. The next time I see them I'm going to ask him over so I can show him how its done. mike 8)

Feels good doesn't it?

I have a small stream that runs immediately behind our backyard and in less than a block it runs into a major branch of a river. I've seen every kind of panfish, basses, walleye, northern, catfish and even muskies caught here. During the summer months the banks are full of anglers of all ages. Its not unusual for me to wander down to the banks to throw a new color of something or even to try out a new bait and is also usual is that I'll have a small bag full of plastics and my small jigs. Its really something to see a youngster get a free jig/plastic or two and then to watch as they cast and catch a few fish when they thought that nothing other than a worm or minnow would get the catching part done. But when they find out that I make this stuff and live "right there" and can come up to see this tackle being made....well this puts a whole new twist on their fishing. I started tinkering with tackle by tying flies at a very early age largely due to a neighbor who showed me how they were tied and who took time to take me fishing and watched as I caught my first fish on a fly he let me tie. I still have this "pay it forward" mentality and honestly feel that if the kids are in the shop making tackle or on the water fishing it they are way less likely to be on drugs. Someone once told me that a kid will never forget his first fish and his first kiss. That person was right.

Its kind of an irony that you should post this topic just now WW. I spoke with the instructor from our local high school that coordinates the city's three high schools' outdoor biology classes where I go in and help teach the kids the fine art of jig casting, painting and tying and now shooting plastic baits....got an appointment set up to do the scheduling for this fall's classes. This is always an exciting time for me.

As I started out WW....ya done good! My hat's off to you!

It's what makes it all worthwhile, guys.  When we take our eyes off ourself and share our knowledge and experiences with others everyone is the better for it.  Good post, Mike.
Until next time.

ctom/Denny I really try to pay forward because of so many people that I have learned things from about  fishing and life in general. Back in 2000 I had a near fatal accident with my truck.I have a plate and screws in c3 and did three months of therapy to walk again. It really makes you think and enjoy every thing that the higher power has done for me. Not to many times do people get a second or even a third chance at life so I try to make the most of the extra time he has blessed me with. The people on this forum have helped a lot and in more ways than I can express. Thanks to you and so many others here. So many of the kids these days have no respect and act like there owed. When you run into one that has respect and wants to learn you tuck them under your wing and you give them all you can. As always its a joy every time you post something. I get up early just too see whats new and can always  count on learning something new and a laugh or two before start my day. ctom have fun with your class  mike

....."ctom have fun with your class"....  mike

Three years ago I did the fall class like the one I am about to do. When I was done, another angler went in and the class built rods. After he was finished, I accompanied the class to a private lake where these kids, many of whom had never put a line in the water, got to put their rods and jigs to use. Its been my experience that a couple hundred wax worms should come along too to help get the fish on the jigs for those who haven't so much as a clue as to what's going on. I was running around helping bait jigs and got tired of running back to the box for waxies so I popped 6 or 8 inside my lip and kept on chugging along. A girl asked me to help with her bait and when I reached up and took that worm out of my mouth I thought she was going to go into orbit. Before the end of that fishing trip, I had her carrying "extra" bait in her lips. The class instructor got a real bang out of that and told me later that morning that that girl had been a real problem to the class early on but had settled down once she got to do some hands on stuff.

Most kids are hungry to learn. Give them the tools and show them the ropes and they eat this stuff up.

Thats how we got started in the business.  It's all about the people you meet while out fishing.  I have met a larger group of military vets now because of fishing.  check out our about us page. www.biglewers.com

Biglewerers That great. I met a couple that were disabled at a Gander mountain by me. I need to find the card they gave me they both like to fish and they are both in wheel chairs. I had gave them some baits. I need to see how they did with them and better yet take them in the boat. mike

Ran into Grandpa and  Porter and traded personal info. We will be pouring bait's in a week or two. Porter told his Grandpa he needed to bring me something for the info. They brought me some sweet corn, cucumbers, & tomatoes. And I had made them some more bait's that he didn't have Flippin hog an Tiny toad sticker. Made Grandpa a chrome plated bait that he had shown me that he had painted. mike

Ran into Porter And Grandpa  today and porter had a pic of a !7" small mouth he had caught on md5xc on a swim jig. And Grandpa told me he caught a pike on the first cast with the chrome bait I gave him. It sure makes the week more enjoyable when I run into these two. Porter will be starting school soon.I sure hope I get to see Grandpa after Porter goes back to school. mike 8)
