Shad Blade bait
« on: 08/22/13 00:20 UTC »
I got the mold with gift card from member of the month. I got a shad blade mold was what I got. I can't come up with enough words to say what Do-It has meant to me. They are hand down the only company to buy molds from. I just had to pour some the day it came. They are 1/2 & 3/4 oz. All I can say is what a awesome bait I can see walleyes on it already. I did some with two hooks and some with one hook.I cut the front hook holder off and it didn't hurt the action at all. Sorry my hot mail is down and I'm not able to post a pic. Thanks Jerry and all at Do-It for such a great job in all you do. mike 8) 8) 8) 8)!!!!!!!!!

A lot of people fish those blade-type baits up here when the water is cooler, late fall and again in early spring. Great baits.

ctom If you use them try an using a 6-10"side swipe instead of vertical lift you will find the bait is in the walleyes zone more of the time with the side swipe vs the vertical lift. By me you see people pulling the the bait around  1- 2' off the bottom and they spend more time out of the zone then the are in it.  mike 8)

I here you on that Mike. When I'm doing these baits I like a softer rod tip and just give the rod a flick of the wrist. The tip loads but about all I am moving that bait is a foot maybe and I like dropping the bait back down on a tight line. Most of my hits come when the bait stops moving up or stops at the bottom of the drop.

Another interesting observation for me here where sauger can be found alongside the waldos is that the sauger can be hooked more at the top of the lift and the walleyes at the bottom. It almost seems like the sauger either will come up to and use water a foot or two off the bottom or they are chasing the bait up and hitting it. Walleyes are generally hitting right on or off the bottom.

Another approach the anglers up here use is to long-line them after a cast and  move them just fast enough to allow them to swim just off bottom. Casting to shallow sand or over clam beds using this technique puts a lot of fish in boats here in the fall and spring.

ctom You are spot on soft rod and every thing you said. I had a sauger  that I caught that didn't have a hook in it it just closed its mouth on it and didn't want to give it back. mike

I was on a great plastic bite late one fall and had a huge willowcat imitation on a heavy jig. I was doing something with my second rod so I cranked the jig with the plastic on it up a couple feet off the bottom and just sat the rod along the gunnels so it wouldn't snag up. A couple second later that rod had a serious arch in it and after getting it cranked in I discovered a very large sauger hanging there
I dropped it back down and set it up just like I did before and went back to my diddling with the other pole and the same thing happened. We put two and two together and both of us rigged a rod that way and jigged a second rod. The rods being jigged nearer the bottom all got walleyes. Those sauger all hit at least two feet off the bottom. As soon as the jigged bait got brought up to the level of the others just hanging there they too got sauger. This was totally different from my previous mind set. Now if I can't get hit off the bottom I'll dead stick a bait on a jig between two and three feet up....just let it hang there as we troll or drift. I'm finding out it makes a great search bait.

I had a friend Denny that always had a rod just setting over the side of the boat and there were times he got just as many fish doing that as he did casting. Fun how things work some time. mike

This lift, drop retrieve will also work on smallmouth in lakes in the late fall. Little secret that's won a lot of late fall bass tournments! (back in the 70's)

Muskygary Have not seen much of you lately. Hope this finds you and yours in good health. I get a lot  casting from shore and in the boat. 1.5 /2 mph on are lakes is the ticket with blades in the fall. Great to hear from ya. mike 8)

In the spring we have some breaks that come up shallow; we will cover them by casting and giving a lift drop retrieve. When you get to the edge of the drop; let the bait fall all the way down the side and slowly work it back to the boat. A lot of times they'll follow it back and won't hit it until it's under the boat.

Muskygary This is one of my favorite ways to fish. There is one rod with a blade bait and one with hair jig or jig and plastic one with the power shot  with me at all times. Have you seen pics I posted under something different.I have three different blade baits I make 1/4 with the twister, 3/8 with the feather 1/2 with feather 3/4 with feather the 1/2 and 3/4 is the shad blade. I don't have a pic up yet of shad blade  Thanks mike
