How many softener with CCM plastic ?
« on: 09/19/13 07:29 UTC »
Hello .

Well , despite the hours spent using the search function , i don't have the answer ...

Now , i know that the Soft CCM is 30 Shore ,and the  softener can further reduce hardness .
But how many softener can i add rightly to the Soft CCM  ?
I mean without ruining all the qualities of CCM plastic .

I assume 10% would be a maximum ?
( For exemple , for 1 quart ( 128 floz) of Soft CCM +12 or 13 floz of Softener )

If CCM would provide a Super Soft CCM ( hardeness : 20 Shore)  this would be easier for me !

I would not recommend pre-mixing a quart of plastic with softener. At some point having the plastic too soft will allow the plastic to tear easily and the durability then goes right out the window. CCM soft is all I have on hand because I mostly do small baits. I will soften some plastic that I use in belly colors but I am making small batches, 4 ounces at a time, and to that amount I'll add 15 drops of softener. The only reason I soften the belly colors is to help in the welding process when the top color is injected.

I've done a lot of playing with colors and one thing I can say for certain is that you will want to use softener in a very controlled way even in small batches of plastic because I have found that some colors, because they require so much of the colorant to be vibrant, will soften the plastic and by adding additional softener the finished product either is sticky or mushy not matter how long or hot you cook it.

I have a small quantity of MF medium plastic left over from a project a year or so ago. In a 4 ounce batch using it, I add like 40 drops of CCM softener to it IF I am using Do-It's X2 colorants and the resulting plastic is extremely resilient and stretchy, but I have to pay special attention to the working temperature of the plastic because it will burn in a heartbeat. I use this plastic for an ice fishing bait I make and these baits are an inch in length out of the mold but I can stretch them to almost 4 inches before they break.

Aside from colorants, glitters and hi lites, manipulating plastic with softener and stabilizer can have backlashes. Working in small batches poses less waste if things go south. I'd suggest you mix as needed.

Hello .

ctom , thank you for your input , and my apologies for the long time responding .

When i wrote "for 1 quart ( 128 floz) of Soft CCM +12 or 13 floz of Softener ?"  i was thinking about the ratio ( here 1/9.75, barely 10% ) .
I'm used to cook about 8 fl oz .

I intend to do custom lure , bigger than "small bait" . I mean baits from  about 1/4 fl oz ( 7cm3 or 7 gram )  up to 1fl oz ( 29.5 cm3= 29.5 gram )
I want them wider than my normal bait , but realy softer . Maybe with a " hard head" , poured with a stiffer plastisol .

Once again ,i took time to dive in the search function and i had chance to found again this topic :

Where Jason gave us a lot of valuable informations !
I remember this :
"If you are making modest changes (<10%) you should rarely see anything strange going harder or softer.  If you are softening by more than 10% you may see some micro bubbles (it really depends on what you are softening with and how you are heating - lots of options and variables)."

It would be a starting point.

Thank.
