A bigger flutter jig for saltwater?
« on: 09/26/13 11:00 UTC »
What about a lrger version of the Flutter jig? Say 12 oz-16 oz or bigger?
I fish a lot of saltwater and with our tide swings in cook inlet big baits are common. I know the 7 oz and 9 oz jigs are popular but on days with minus tides we really need bigger jigs. I make jigs to 40 oz but really like things in the 16-20 oz range.

I haven't tested the 40 oz or the 24 oz versions yet but the 14 oz version is a killer on the Halibut.
They get pretty big the state record is 459#. Generally though 20# fish are the most common.
We have the worlds second highest tides. The biggest tides of the year will move over 30 feet of water.
4# and even 5# weights aren't that uncommon. Though most days 1# or 2# of weight will get your bait down.
So yes bigger jigs are popular up here.
Probably the most popular is the hilts 24 oz Big Mojo Bullet head with a boneyards bait 11" grub tail For Halibut and Lingcod.

I commercial salmon fished the cook inlet one summer, awesome time  lots of work. I fished prince Williams  sound for halibut and bottom fish between our salmon openers. The  rainbow trout fishing up there is out of this world. Alaska has a special place in my heart that's for sure

I had a law clerk once who was from Alaska.  He quit law school and went back to Alaska because that's where his heart was.  The last I heard he had bought a charter boat and was taking clients out fishing every day.  Sitka, I think.  I always think fondly of Robbie because he chased his dream...and found it.
Until next time.

I love Alaska and would never leave.
It is not for everyone though and many people who think they will love it often leave after a few short years.
The fishing and hunting can be good but they certainly have their challenges.
I like icefishing as does my wife so we like our winters as well.
I got into making my own lures partially due to the fact it was/is hard to find good quality tackle in the sizes I need to fish our saltwater species. Shipping costs make ordering jigs more expensive as well.
As of late I have had a couple of custom molds made and also ordered several molds from Shawn Collins who has been very good to deal with. He has also made me some of his stock molds in the bigger sizes that I often use.
I would like to find more stock molds in bigger sizes though. The mass produced sandcast molds certainly are cheaper than CNC machined molds. Shawns molds are extremely high quality though.
I will do what it takes to get the molds I want/need whether that means ordering a CNC machined mold, Buying old molds on EBAY or buying from whichever vendor I can find who has them.
I probably have 40+ molds right now.
I just love making jigs and I also love it when others catch fish on my stuff and send me pics or videos.
Hopefully Do-It will start making a few more bigger jig molds in the future for us customers building larger saltwater tackle.

This 25 oz jig is only 10" long 1.15" wide at its widest point and .78" thick at the gill plate area.
Not quite the size of a belgian waffle maker. It is a two cavity mold though.

I also had a mold made for the same jig with 16 and 20 oz cavities.

I don't currently have a pic of the 40oz jig but it is torpedo shaped with an eyelet on each side and one on the top and is designed for vertical jigging in saltwater.
I'll see if I can't post a link in the video section that one of my jig testers made of the 25 oz jig in action.
